Your story might have given me an interesting idea for a weekend city break. I only need to find a cheap but good quality Rolex knock off and book myself into the same hotel.

fick . Thought that would be hard to slide of ya wrist. I've had my super avenger for 5 years now and only this year I have took it on holiday. Which earlier this year was Barcelona. But been there 3 times now and not seen any thieves. Might have to start wearing my Seiko orange monster holiday watch again.

I've been to Barcelona three times now in the last two years and have never had a problem. All three times I've been wearing my Breitling and had a wallet on me and I've visited in June/July/August so high temps only wearing t shirt and shorts. I was well warned prior to going but both me and my girlfriend were never approached or had any type of distraction pulled on us nor did I see anybody relieved of any items.
You must be either very scary looking, or look like one of the local bad guys!

I've hardly heard of anyone going to Barcelona and not having hassle. It must be 20yrs ago that I went with my missus and it was the same then and I vowed never to go back. I went more recently with work and our local guy had us move around in a tight group like some kind of military operation!

When to Barca in 2014 with my partner and managed to stop a thief attempting to pickpocket my partners handbag. It was coming off the Metro and it was quite quiet but I noticed this young lad following us behind so I naturally tried to keep cautious. As we walked up the steps to reach the ground floor he tried sliding his hand up the banister rail to grab the bag. I noticed it straight away and turned around. Even before I had fully turned around he ran back down the steps empty handed, obviously to try his luck again with another person. Shame really.

Other than that one incident which could have been much worse, we had a lovely time and Barca is a beautiful city.

You're gonna get theives in any popular city so you just have to be cautious. It's also not worth the risk of taking anything valuable out either (which is a shame).

On the flip side, I went to Barcelona in August for 4 days and never had a single issue nor did I see anything to raise any concerns.

We stayed towards at Onix Rambla and on our daily walks down La Rambla, there were police officers every 200 metres and others on bikes/cycles etc. Granted I didn't go towards the beach at night and stayed around the hotel area, but even at 1am there was nothing to worry about in the area I was in, even played Pokémon and caught a Blastoise at midnight outside the Apple store!
I knew the reputation it has, my brother has been there twice.

About 30 of us went to Barcelona earlier this year for my companies k/o. No one had any trouble and there was no signs of any trouble. Not saying it doesn't happen but I thought it was a nice city and would happily go back.

Currently in Barcelona at the moment. Didn't take my new Tudor with me thanks to this thread and I'm glad.

First day here yesterday and we were sat in Burger King and a guy took a Italian girls bag whilst her family was putting rubbish in the bin. It took me a few seconds to realise what happened but I managed to get the bag back from the guy but he made it outside and onto the street.

Ironically I bought my Tudor in Barcelona earlier this year (I can recommend the jewellers Rabat). I've been 3 times this year, including a conference right by where the OP had his Rolex lifted and not had a problem.. but, you can tell it's a city where you need to keep your wits about you.. Just got back from Rome, which felt the same.

It is a nice city and most people do go back. In fact it says a lot for just how nice it is. But, I've been to many destination cities round the world and out of all of them, Barca has had the most obvious petty theivery.

My wife had her Prada sunglasses stolen off of her head in Barcelona. She took it very badly and would not go back.
It's a lively place but more "edgy" than anywhere else we've been in Europe.

Barcelona is one of the worst places in the world for this sort of crap, especially on a night out. Sorry you became one of the victims.
It's funny, Paris get's a bad name on here, but in my experience, Barcelona is much, much worse.
I've done countless trips to Barcelona with mates/work/rugby and everytime, without fail, a member of our party falls victim to street robber/pickpockets (despite the warning before we go!!).

No wallet, no watch and no phone to be taken out (the sim card will be in a sim server calling 20EUR/min numbers in minutes - the phone gets sold for nothing, it's the live sim they want)

If you enable PIN on your sim they can do eff all once the phone is switched off (presumably they remove it from the phone before making the calls).

Yes, it seems to be women who suffer most from the numerous thieves in Barcelona, jewellery, phones, watches etc. It's inevitable that they will be wary of returning there when there are so many other safer cities (excluding Rome) to go and enjoy yourself. Although I've enjoyed Barcelona, I wouldn't now want to go there again.

Friend of mine was robbed while we were there, on the Ramblas.

Someone also went through our bag at the airport when it was just me and the O/h.

Hi, my wife was robbed on the morning of 1 may 2017 at 05:45 am in Barcelona, in the Barceloneta zone, street Carrer De Ramon, near the Opium and Catwalk club. After leaving the club and searching for a taxi, a group of 5-6 persons made a circle around us and they stold her watch from her hand. It was a Hublot Big Bang Steel with Diamonds, Reference 341.SX.130.RX.114, serial number 1107309. We also made a complaint at the police in Barcelona. I spent two nights speaking with persons that work on that area and they told me that every nigh from 04 am to 06 am this group of persons (Pakistanez, turkish and maro) steal watches, wallets from the persons that are leaving the clubs. Also, from what I can see the police is not interested in stopping them. I am willing to offer a 2500 euros reward for recovering the watch.
Thank you!
