The dream watch purchase: up to £50,000 to spend.

The road less travelled.
Kari Voutilainen makes some special watches and will even deliver in person. His cheapest pieces like this one are just about in budget (or were before the CHF moved against Sterling). My photos don't do justice I'm afraid but you get some idea of the quality of his work.

I don't care if it's frivolous overpriced nonsense (not the point of this thread anyway)
If I had £50K to 'waste' on a watch, it would be this
An 1815 Chronograph, just beautiful
I like the double split too, but it's a bit pricey; and looks huge on my puny wrist

Very nice. A little reminiscent of the classic Breguet faces.Kari Voutilainen makes some special watches and will even deliver in person. Isn't it customary on these sort of threads to criticise the fact that the screw heads don't line up?
From an engineering point of view the screws should be done up until they are correctly tightened/torqued, but taking craftsmanship and engineering up a level it should be possible to calculate and position the start of the screw thread cutting die so that the screw heads do actually line up when correctly tightened.I have heard of classic car concours where entry's have lost points for having screw heads lined up, they should just lie where they lie when properly secured.

Kari Voutilainen...
Excellent piece on him in the current edition of WatchTime magazine. It states that the starting price is CHF72k so comfortably above the £50k, still worth every cent though, and this is a fantasy choice anyway! As for my choice... I've always had a soft spot for the platinum Daytona though if it was to be a once in a lifetime spend I don't think I'd go for a Rolex. This is going to sound boringly non-committal as I can't think of anything that I'd make an absolute beeline for, though the likes of F.P.Journe or some-such would probably see my money.

Was lucky enough to be in a position to drop £50k on one piece earlier this year after having built up a small watch collection over the last 25yrs or so and deciding that rather than them languishing in the sock drawer unworn months on end(tend to wear my Apple Watch the vast majority of the time these days),that it would be better to sell most of them off and buy just one watch instead. When it came to deciding on which watch to buy-essentially to keep forever, there were a few in the frame, but ultimately, for me,the only brand I have never lost interest in is Rolex. It also happens to be that I have never lost money on any Rolex I have bought which also helped make my mind up.So in the end I decided on the Platinum Daytona.Initially I was going to buy the the standard one,but a guy I've bought a lot of watches off over the years had the diamond dial model in stock and when I saw it,I preferred it to the standard one-even though I'm normally not keen on diamonds on a gents watch.Putting my debit card into the machine and checking the amount before entering my pin made me gulp a bit-I only paid slightly more than this watch for my first detached house(a long time ago!)Worth it though!

The platinum Daytona is lovely. The weight of them is something else and as with the day date very few people will recognise that they are actually platinum.
The weight of it is quite a suprise the first time you handle one-One of the watches I had before was a white gold Daytona which itself is heavier than the ss one and even so the extra weight of the Platinum was very noticeable. Its a great piece and doesn't really attract attention from people who aren't into watches-which is one of the things I like most about it.Enzo Gorlami said:
