...Following on from the recent mega cash watch threads, what about normal everyday watches that are nice but don't cost the earth?

One fave of mine (child of the 80's):

I only have one watch, which is significantly valuable to me. If I'm somewhere it shouldn't be, I don't wear one at all. Would be interested to know what PH can suggest as a utility watch, ideally to look smart-ish when spannering / on holiday and uninsured...

Those 80s Casios are design classics, as is the original Swatch, Seiko 5 and various Timex models.

However, for that money I'd probably buy a Tissot Classic Dream because it's got class (partly implied by the brand) you don't expect at the price-point.

Am I missing the places that sell them for 100 sheets or less?

A small budget does not mean you can't wear an interesting watch if you look second hand and don't mind taking a chance.

Here's a little old thing from the "atomic age" I bought for about £40 a few years ago.

The choices are many at this price, as said you need to take the odd chance and not be a brand snob.

The Seiko 5 range is yours for the taking, I wear an SNK805 (iirc - green one) a lot, and a Timex auto that's currently on my wrist. I love both of these, both see more wear than my Seiko Alpinist which is out of budget.

Another brand I like is HMT. An HMT Janata is a lovely thing, made in India and a fraction of your budget. Used reconditioned ones are £5 or so. Just use them until they stop working, which could be in a year's time or who-knows-when.

I also like Kered of France, built in the 1960s with Seiko movements. £10-20, typically.

I'm not allowed to wear a watch in the factory so any watch I wear to work needs to be safe to leave on a desk. Bearing in mind that a £5k Rolex is only covered when it's on your wrist or in a safe, you'd have to be mad to leave it in a jacket pocket. £100 for a Seiko is more than enough. Take your pick!

PS - that Tissot is lovely.

I'm a sucker for '70s vintage Swiss watches.

Brushed and polished case, Swiss automatic movement, lovely blue sunburst dial.

I've been having a massive dumb moment. I saw this thread 2 days ago and for some reason I thought it was 100 thousand pounds. Then I was wondering why everyone was posting sub £100 watches... thinking it was a joke. Doh!

It doesn't matter if it's £100 or £10,000 you can still pick up a good watch

Personally I'd go for an Eco-Drive as it can live on the windowsill but I'll put this up for approval

The RH Citizen Eco Drive Titanium was £99 in semi-permanent High St sale !
The LH one is almost 15 years old
Great everyday watches, they just work, no winding, no batteries, no fuss
