Search reveals a few threads (see what I did there!) on this but nothing recent so would appreciate a bit of up to date advice and recommendation.

I'm hitting the half century in a few weeks and to mark the significance, rather than the usual Birthday Berni Inn and Bunk Up, the OH has kindly offered to arrange for me to have a Tailored Suit made. I don't wear suits everyday; mainly for big meetings and posh dos. I work in what is loosely described as the 'creative industries' albeit it in a specialised field and have a preference for a style that is subtly quirky. I've two off the peg William Hunt suits that I quite like, but neither are particularly durable.

So, any pointers and recommendations would be gratefully received.

I'm in Chelmsford if that's important and budget wise; I'm an Omega Seamster, Mercedes kind of guy....rather Rolex/Roller.

Thanks in advance.

I've used Tom James for years. Made to measure rather than bespoke, you get to choose from a huge range of cloths and linings. They do some pretty wild suits as well as sober ones.

More interested to find out a little more about what you do, to be honest!

I used the Moss bespoke service last year and was quite impressed. Seemed to be pretty good value too.

From memory it was £400 for a suit with a spare pair of trousers

Always go on recommendations.

Always get at least two pairs of trousers

Ensure you get real button holes on jacket cuffs

Ensure you get a belt prong guide

Buy the best material you can afford

Just bought a couple of new work suits myself & was going to go with this service but subsequently went with two from their tailored range & then had them tailored using their own service. Picked them up at the weekend & they're perfect.

Trotter and Deane in Bury St Edmunds is just up the road and will tailor you whatever you want, plus you get to see/feel the clothes, linings, buttons etc etc .... John and the guys are very good. Alternatively Dapper Fox in Bury SE as well and James is ex T&D and I have suits from both which I'm very happy with.

Loop on front waist that belt prong goes through; ensures no shifting of belt buckle from central point. Like real button holes on cuffs, mark of a bespoke suit and a tailor worth his salt!

Having learned something so early today I can go back to bed!

I have some trousers with that and never knew what it was for- but many people will argue that a bespoke suit shouldn't have belt loops.

I got two made to measure suits in Bangkok whilst I was on holiday in Thailand.

Did some research and specifically avoided all the high street places offering suits for £50 and went to Nickermans, very well recommended online and in Lonely Planet.

For around £450 I got two suits each with 2 trousers, and 4 shirts.

Next time I go I will make a couple of subtle changes as you learn as you go. However, I struggle with suits off the peg as I'm on the large side, and for the same price as a couple of suits that I had worn in my 20s from Debenhams/M&S etc, I now have 2 excellent suits with all my own choice of material, lining etc.

Would recommend, though I realise the cost would then have to include a trip to Thailand...

Mrs could knock you up something made of bin bags wink

Where she works she could get you some nice purple ones, yellow ones, all sorts of colours and even with perhaps a matching yellow caddy 'manbag' accessory?

I've bought shirts and a friend dressed a wedding party from them and had great results!

ah good for you. I am sure many people do. I am also sure many people don't, including me. I even gave it another chance, and that was a mess too.
