£40K to invest in vintage watches

There's a chap on the Vintage Forum , he purchased a Rolex Seadweller (Red text) back in 1975 , brand new, he has used it , not much , and it's all original and got the guff that goes with the watch aswell , box , hang tag and so on. He paid 250 pounds back then! You can imagine how much it's worth now.

£2100! I wish i had got more interested in Rolex back around 15 years ago , i just did not have the financial means.

I paid 1275.00 for my Breitling Aerospace back in 2001 , the price of these now , well..they are about the same.

Just an idea (Rolex again) but something a bit different to the SS sports watches.

Yellow Gold Day Date II

Was released in 2006, stopped production and discontinued in late 2015- so a very, very short production run considering the 36 mm original version I believe has been in production since the 50's and they still make it today?

The Day Date II is 41 mm, extremely rare in this period they made a lot of rose gold versions, so the yellow gold is rarer than normal, and part of it's run was in recession years so perhaps even less than normal made.

Never more than 1-2 max for sale at any one time in yellow gold in UK- often none.

Approx 20k to buy today, still not bad considering the rrp on the new 40 mm day date. Should appreciate for sure.

Just IMHO, not a watch dealer or collector by any means..

I think full set good condition 16610LVs will do well in the medium to long term

Short production run. Maxi dial. Look good on women as well as men. Very understated.

They're already priced quite high but I think they will outperform their peers

40k should buy you six pieces. Possibly seven

do you really want to invest in the true sense i.e. create a return, or do you want to do what most people do when they say 'invest' i.e. buy some and enjoy them and not lose too much money?

But is 250 to 2100 in 41/42 years really a good investment? I reckon the a good spread of stocks or property would have spanked it.

Bought my Seadweller in 78 new £200, should have bought more, it's my only watch, god knows what's it's worth now.

I'm not sure i'd be chucking loads of money into luxury collectables at the mo. The market is only high because of a prolonged period of low interest rates, but you'd have to have some balls to assume you've still got the ability to turn a profit from now, and not to risk losing half your money very rapidly when the inevitable happens, pretty soon.

It doesn't even cover inflation over that period (equivalent price in 2016 would be £2352.50)

Actually I don't think he ever made bracelets.

In Dec 2011 Sothebys handled a Daniels' Millennium with a reserve of £60-80k.

But there's stuff connected to though not made by him, especially in context of his work on the co-axial movement, and miscellaneous items of horological interest which will be of sufficient interest to Daniels aficionados to be worth investing in.
