I do admit to be in the "buy for the sake of buying" camp when it comes to boy's toys. Apart from my Porsche of course. That just serves a purpose.
Same problem with watches and cars - My buy switch is always on but my sell switch doesn't seem to work smile

Blancpain didn't invent the genre nor did they beat Rolex to rotating bezel divers watch. Rolex released first watch in this genre some 20 years before Sub and FF came about, it was called Rolex Zerographe (also there was another version called Centregraph) and Sub was based on it.

Saying that Sub is a copy of FF is a popular misconception spread by Rolex bashers (especially those who own Steinhart/Squaaaaaaales or any other low rent copies aka homages) who ride on it to make a point of some sort.

Jacque Cousteau heralded the Rolex Sub and took it places the fifty fathom's didn't go. They also strapped a sub to the Bathyscape and went into a big trench.

Rolex worked in conjunction with the deep sea stuff.

why not get a sea dweller to really piss on your son's chips?

The Sea Dweller is, according to some, the best Submariner ever made.

If you got a Submariner, how long will it be before you want a GMT, then a Deep Sea, then a Daytona?
I tend to agree - but not over the need to buy another Rolex.

I got a Submariner in 1977 - one with the word "Submariner" written in red. However, about 5 years ago, I managed to convince myself that I needed an IWC chronograph and, about 20 years ago, a Breitling Aerospace. The latter is rarely used now but the other two compete evenly for "wrist time". The Rolex keeps almost flawless time; the IWC seems to lose about 10 seconds a day.

I think I paid £140 for the Rolex in 1977 in Hong Kong. Bought a new bracelet for it last year - somewhere >£800 I think!!

+1. Had three, all worse than a Swatch watch for timekeeping laugh

quartz are better than automatics for timekeeping, but does it really matter? Minibuses are better than Porsches for carrying people after all.

I have to agree with the prevailing view about buying a Steinhart or CW 'homage' if a Rolex is what you really want.

I bought a Steinhart Ocean GMT a couple of years ago. It's a superb watch, beautifully made and amazing value. The design is perhaps a little too close to the Rolex for comfort, but I'm definitely not trying to fool anyone.

Unfortunately, it has just made me want a GMT Master II Black/ blue even more. I say 'unfortunately' because I just can't afford one frown.

If laid flat, it gains very slightly; if standing on edge, it will lose slightly. It's been about 25 seconds slow for weeks now - caused by my adjusting to a time-zone change. And certainly not a fake as Messrs Rolex have attended to it from time to time smile

Wait! Rolex has worked on it and still it keeps perfect time?

It's a miracle on a par with the second coming of Christ.

Not at all. They aren't an attractive watch.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I love the Fifty Fathoms.

For some reason they seem to be most popular with gay men. According to a BP dealer I know at least.
I thought that was Cartiers? Damn, I'll have to change my favourite watch now, just to make people think I'm a gay man! wink

I'd never buy a Rolex Sub, personally, but if I had the money I'd definitely look at a Fifty Fathoms, I think it's a cracking watch.

Not really, no. Which is why I once owned three at the same time wink

I think I'm reaching the conclusion that for some the Sub epitomises the essence of Rolex, whilst for others the fluted DJ bezel does the same. That's why I bought mine after all!

So, I'm just temporarily smitten I think. I'll sleep on it a while longer...
