I see what you mean, but I also think it is legitimate to point out to prospective purchasers that what they may see as the "runt of the litter" (hesalite, manual, no date etc) is in fact the one to have in terms of heritage.

I quite like this quote from the Watch Snob The Speedmaster is one of those things best experienced in its purest form. It is not interesting when adulterated with gewgaws like an automatic winding system or a date guichet, grafted onto it to make it more palatable to a wider audience. The Speedmaster is like a good single malt; if you're not going to take it neat, don't take it at all.http://uk.askmen.com/fashion/mens-watches/omega-sp...

Having said that I find the endless space-themed "special editions" tiresome (with the obvious exception of the two Snoopys above) and am just wondering what sort of fuss Omega will make in 2019…
Unsurprisingly I think that quote demonstrates precisely how silly that attitude is. I nearly used scotch as another example of an area where people get far too precious about being seen to be doing the 'done' thing that they fail to take an real joy from the activity.

Not sure why my comment about the "Moonwatch" was so contentious for some (Maybe they took my 'start with' to mean buy one? That wasn't my intent, which I think was clear to anyone who read more than that line.)

It's still the closest to the original Speedmaster Pro design (very little changed) and is the basis for most of the other versions (even the reduced and recent coaxials owe much to the Pro's design - Only the Mk2 and the digital thing ( wink ) are radically different).

As I said, anyone trying to make sense of the Speedmaster range, should probably start looking at the Pro and then consider the options and pick the one they like.

If you ONLY like (or simply prefer, even) any of the variants buy one of those, but most of them are simply variants of the Pro (usually with a splash of colour - Some will see that as a positive, others not) rather than radically different.

M.

Of course if you want a cheaper moonwatch there's always the Bulova Moonwatch. Its not even without credentials to claim its heritage either as the original was used in the Apollo 15 mission.

The current version uses the Precisionist movement (now rebadged 262kHz) so is also super accurate.

Couldn't agree with you more, single malt with plenty of crushed ice (because I hate the stuff) and moonwatch with or without flared trousers. Here's a real 1970's flared trousers version..

Hi Lorne, this was NASAs view at the time but in practise the automatic works quite well in 0g due to inertia; Pogue (of Seiko 'Pogue' fame) and Furrer (Sinn 142) were well documented examples.

The 'moon' Speedmaster spec will always be the classic of the range I guess, but I preferred what I think to be the final true evolution of the Speedmaster (using a Lemania movement); additional day/date, 24hr indicator, better pusher recess, central minute chronograph hand, automatic, 'moonwatch' case -

I have these 2, both inherited and well used. The mk2 was my fathers and the pre moon was grandfathers.

I do like the reissue of the Mk2 and should funds allow at any time one will be mine smile

The mark 2 was made from 1969-1975 and steadily becoming desirable.

That other speedy looks like a 2998 from the early 60. I can tell you that it 100% needs a service. The bottom chrono hand not sitting at 12 tells me that. Send it to Swiss Time Service (STS) call and ask for Simon Freese. He will understand not to polish the crap out if it and it will come back with the original parts unlike sending it to Omega!! Please don't do that!

If you want to message me i can help with it all and date it for you.

Love em...my fave watches ever period, collect them...

originally got the solar impulse, then the 9300 came out, had to have one of those, so got the blue one, then decided quite like the black one, ( has the nice white hands as opposed to shiny metal ) , then spotted the grey side of the moon, had to have one, then snoopy came along, then the vintage dark side and now finally a moonphase...I really like them all , think the 9300 movement is fantastic particularly , but also the snoopy is a nice look..think I will stop now, but having said that the meoterite dail one looks nice, we shall see...

I've got a few watches but have recently bought a 2004 Speedmaster Automatic (or Reduced). This watch seems to attract a bit of hate from a few watch snobs for some reason but I love it and with slim wrists it's perfect for me.
