I'm interested in peoples thoughts, especially as they may point me in a direction I have overlooked. I've a budget of up to £500, I'm looking for an Automatic watch, don't want a dress style watch, but neither do I want a full on divers watch. My tick boxes are a nice simple clear face, leather strap and with a reasonable amount of substance to it.

I've exhausted the likes of Creation watches and I think I'm erring away from Seiko 5's anyway, as much as one or two look nice. I really like the Christopher Ward C8 UTC Worldtimer but that's almost a grand and out of my budget. Not particularly brand conscious, just want a nice watch but nothing I look at is tickling my fancy.

Google Field and Flieger watch styles, you might find something to your liking. Here's a starter -

Clear dial? Check. Neither dressy or diver? Check. Substantial? Check (43mm so large but not overly so). Leather and auto? Check. Decent brand? Check. Budget...? Well, this is PH, so a little over should be expected biggrin

Those are nice enough but Seiko have any number in that style for £50-100, so I can't get too excited about them. I have one on my wrist now, an SNK805 that is very similar for £40, though they are now £60.

Tissot are nice.
My favourite <500 watch though is the Seiko Alpinist, SARB 017. Popular choice I know, but I have yet to see one out in the wild other than mine. Try the other Seiko SARBxxx range, a cut above the 5 range, so they should be at 4x-5x the price. The cheaper 7s26 movement is replaced by the 6r15 or similar, and the whole thing is a good step upmarket.

some definite interesting options there.

The Flieger style definitely appeals so off I go...

Just my luck, I've found what I've been looking for and fallen for the Seiko Sarg015 (despite not originally looking at Seikos).

The big spanner in the works is that I can't find one for love nor money. Anyone know of something similar to that style of watch that won't cost a fortune?

Look through the Seiko 5 range, they have a few similar watches with blue or black faces. They won't be quite as nice, the SARx range are very nice and a definite step up from the 5 range. My SARB 017 absolutely glows, it's a lovely looking watch, while my daily Seiko 5 is nice enough but not so special looking.
