Does the practice of getting discounts on watches in shops still happen these days?

When it comes to Rolex I imagine there's little scope for negotiation due to the waiting lists, but do people go into a shop (Watches of Switzerland / Goldsmiths etc.) and manage to successfully negotiate money off the listed price for other brands?

Yep I walked into Goldsmiths a few years ago to get a Omega Seamaster, tried it on etc was interested and then said to the girl, right whats the best you can do, got a few hundred off the shelf price in the end. Obviously this was an easily obtainable model.

I tried the same a few months later when collecting my Tudor GMT which was at the time on a waiting list and was told no movement at all.

eek

Not even Quartz included?! hehe

I'm a bit annoyed as I had a 10% / 20% code which was working on some stuff like Grand Seiko. Could have saved a few grand using it but seems they have closed off that avenue for now.

From what I have heard, things are pretty tight saleswise at the volume end of the market ... by that, I mean the likes of Tudor, Omega or Brietling. If you think about these brands, cities may have 4 or 5 retailers selling the same watch so I would guess now is a good time to try and get a deal. I'd be trying to get a min of 20% off a new watch in the current climate (unless it was a R, PP, AP or VC of course!).

Try asking for the value of the ‘free’ gift or voucher off, that’s what I did in Beaverbrooks last year. Worked out about 15% (longines)

Got 12% off a Grand Seiko by ringing around and asking ADs to beat/price match.

Walked in Goldsmiths, bargained hard and obtained 7% off a Speedmaster sapphire sandwich. Could have got more elsewhere but wanted it on the wrist there and then.

As noted, it's clearly driven by the demand for the model. Any kind of wait list of course means no discount.

I've gotten a discount on every watch I've purchased that wasn't a wait list item.

20% off on a Planet Ocean
15% off a Tudor Black Bay S+G
25% off a Tag Calibre 1

When I bought my Tag watch (Beaverbrooks underneath the Tag shop branding I think), I asked about (or they offered, can’t remember) finance.

It was 0%, so I asked if there was a discount available if the finance wasn’t taken. I think they offered 10% if I didn’t take the finance.

It was a few years ago, but it still might be a good opener for a discount discussion.

I've managed roughly 20% off a planet ocean and speedy pro, bought 10 years apart at different shops.

Not a bad sale on at WOS/Goldsmiths. Got 40% off a Grand Seiko (albeit a discontinued model) a couple of weeks ago and 0% was also available.

Plenty of places will discount if you’re cheeky enough to ask etc. Recently got a discount from omega themselves which I was surprised about.
A seamaster which was £5600 got it for £5000.

Similar to me , about 20% of the PO and the strap thrown in , 20% of the standard Speedie and 15% off a Tudor S&G (this was at Fraser Hart, Goldsmiths had told me no discount available so I walked down the road)

Not saying it's going to work on everything, but I have a discount code for Goldsmiths which saves 20% on some stuff.

Not a 'negotiated' discount, but I bought my Tudor GMT from Ernest Jones, about 6 months after they were released (and had a waiting list, of sorts)

RRP then was about £2800 I believe, and at the time our workplace discount scheme had a special offer with EJ, so I ended up getting 20% off..

That was a case of 'buying' £2800 worth of gift cards for the discounted price and using those to pay for the watch, so the store still received the full value.

That's the best I managed laugh But shortly before then, I was instead looking at getting a Speedmaster, which were readily available from Goldsmiths etc, and I reckon I could've got a small amount knocked off as the branch were actually very welcoming and accommodating for a potential first 'big' purchase.
