I had been on a wait list for a PP travel time, now discontinued frown

This one has popped up....

https://www.hackettwatches.com/watch/2014-aquanaut...

Question is would you trade 4 or 5 watches for the one?? I'd be looking at losing a 2020 Rolex Exp 2, 2021 Rolex Submariner date, 2022 JLC master control geographic, 2020 Zenith A386 manufactue edition and maybe a 2023 Batman.

Probably not.

Definitely not for that.

I’d say yes.

None of the watches you’re selling are unobtanium so if you really miss them just buy one back later

Great piece that PP.

Would you feel comfortable and able to enjoy a £57k watch on your wrist is my question having owned a couple on your trade in list. I don't think I could do so personally. I'd constantly be worrying about marking it or perhaps theft etc.

Another no on that PP but interested to follow the decision making process! We've all had these thoughts!

Would this literally be your only watch?

If so, no.

Personally, I wouldn't. I get bored when I've worn a watch for too long and love to change which one gets wrist time on a regular basis. I'm no fan of Rolex but it seems you have some good pieces in your collection for variety. One watch at that price would have me panicking that it will get scratched or stolen. Something like that would be more of a special occasion watch rather than an everyday one.

Edited to add, it seems you have a lot of watches to choose from so yeah, go for it!

I'm totally at the other end of the spectrum (frequent flier in the under £200 watch thread) but i have thought could i slim down my collection of nearly 50 watches to maybe half a dozen more expensive ones.

I've been back and forth over this many times but i can get just as much joy wearing a £20 watch as i would a £20k watch so i'd rather have a large collection of cheaper watches than a few much more expensive ones. I have a few watches worht over £1k and i worry about damaging those so really would go mad if i had a 10k watch and it got damaged.

I think the main issue is that it will be a magnet for thieves just about anywhere you go - they're really obvious to spot, they're very in demand (in the right places this is a common watch, I saw loads of them on holiday last year in Greece)/popular which isn't a great combo for not being mugged at some point. Wouldn't (and don't with mine) care about wearing a Rolex anywhere, but a PP of that type will attract a different type of thief.

I would trade all the above watches for that lovely PP, no hesitation.
Prices have risen quite a bit since I was in the market for a RO years ago, had the choice between a 25860 chrono and a nice 16610LV sub (the second year one), both for a measly 6k in 2010...
Took the Rolex as the PP always had a slight fragility for me, so not usable as I wear my watches 24/7.
Hindsight etc

If you want to do it, try ringing up Dominic and talking to him. He may well be willing to do the trade you suggest. Tell him you're from PH where he comes highly recommended. He used to post here, haven't seen him for ages though.
I think his username was DomH.

In terms of the theft risk, I think this is very location dependent. It certainly wouldn't put me off in the slightest, given where I live, but it would do so if I spent a lot of time in a high risk of theft area - ie certain parts of London etc.

Here in the West of Scotland though? Nah, I'd be happy to wear that pretty much anywhere I go.

Yeah, I've not seen him post in a while, but he's always been a big contributor around here. I'm going to call into his shop in June as I'm in London for my birthday and as it's a big one, I'm going to have a browse of his stock! Not sure my budget stretches to that Patek though!

Depends if you wear them regularly IMO.

I just traded a PO, Tag C1 and a Tudor S+G for a Rolex Explorer 2.

Mainly because I hadn't worn any of them since I got my Air King. Now I rotate almost daily between my Air King and Explorer 2 and get great wear out of them both instead of having 3 sat in the safe.

OP, I suspect you know Dominic H anyway. Is that PP really worth 57K? Not sure if it is to me but maybe for you.

How attached to your other watches are you? I have a dozen, which is too many, but I’m rather attached to my three Rolexes and the Vacheron and the recently acquired Blancpain. And of course the Pateks are staying…

BTW I’d be happy to wear that Traveltime. You don’t have to show it off.

That’s the one Patek that I have considered trading a number of other watches for and I may well do it one day. As I get older I find I am less attached to all of my expensive watches and would almost find it easier to just have one special one which in the case of that aquanaut could be worn every day.

I’m not there yet and could probably never part with my sub but I’d definitely let some of the others go for a grail watch.

In that case, yes I probably would. You can only wear one watch at a time anyway, and this will still leave you with a sizeable collection whilst consolidating a few into a really special piece.

Well to draw this thread to a conclusion, i didn't go for it in the end, the figures didn't quite work out for me really. Decided to take some time and sell some watches over the next 6 months and see where that leaves me. To add though, the communications i had with Dom were first rate and would not hesitate to deal with him in the future!

Mr H is my go-to if I want to sell something, and I’ve bought from him a number of times.

BTW the 5164 was something I’d asked for too (along with a couple of other PP options). Shame. It was desirable in a number of ways. But no watch is worth paying overs for as far as I’m concerned.
