Thanks all for your suggestions so far. It's a bit of a minefield, as there are so many variations, even once you have decided on a bi-metal with white face. Hence, I don't want to start swanning accross the globe on a wild goose chase.

The seller is Ancient & Modern Jewellers in Blackburn. They are an Ebay powerseller, who have a shop that you can walk into (so not faceless). All of their feedback is good, which considering the amount of watches they sell, I would have thought is a good indicator (if they screwed me over, I would make sure that their name was mud).

...you can trust them. I sold a SS Daytona to Johnny Marr (one of the proprietors) a couple of years ago.

Two-tone Daytonas can be bought below list all day long. SS Daytonas are readily available at about £2k above list, or if you're a very good customer of a particular dealer - one always materialises out of the safe, at list. Demand is 'engineered' - in the same way that DeBeers maintains the demand for diamonds.

The Rolex Warranty is valid wherever you buy the watch from - as long as it's authentic and the 2(?) years hasn't elapsed since original purchase. I have a Submariner LV that I purchased from a grey dealer last year - it's since had some warranty work carried out by Rolex London - no questions asked.

Fantastic, I feel a lot easier now. They will actually post the goods to me and I have 5 days to return it if not happy. Should be able to get it verified in that time.

Thanks again all.

Go to Dubai and buy it there. You're sure to save more than the cost of the flight.

My Breitling cost £1,800 in Dubai from an authorised dealer vs £3,000 in the UK.

Very True.
Go to the Al-Seddiqi Watch Place (sp?) Al-Futtaim Jewellry or in Mall of the Emirates where there is a Rolex and Brietling actual shops where the watches will certainly be real.
I enquired on the price of Daytona (base model) at Al-Seddiqi and they said 12000dhs which is £1800 which is well cheap if you ask me. He told me they go up to about £4000 which will be the gold one with all the bells and whistles. Whilst in Mall of the Emirates I was in the Breitling Shop (Dreaming) and I heard an English Tourist say in amazement "Thanks, where I come from these cost double!!"

There is a jewellers in Blackburn, Lancashire that have the exact model I want. It is brand new, but they are not an official Rolex dealer. They buy in bulk from an authorised agent and then sell them at a reduced price £5395 against £6510.

Sounds dodgy, take care.

one approach is to get your name down at many many dealers - most dont take a deposit.

Then just call them regularly and see when one is available.

I got my sea-dweller this way after being told it was a 12 month wait, when I went back to the dealer he had a couple available - which someone had ordered and then didn't want

this might sound like a stupid question to some of you, but why do they have waiting lists for rolex watches?

are the types of metal used in them very scarce or are they hard to build meaning a back log of customers?

Rolex carefully control the supply to keep the price up.

very nice of them so they could sell dozens more if they wanted to but this way the 2nd hand market stays strong as well.

I was just surprised to hear that you could get so much off from a high street dealer.

Would you expect to get discounts (on the high street) on watches like SS Submariner dates or GMT IIs etc?
