Basically Some Rolex watches are easy to obtain discount. Forget discounts on Sports Steel watches like Submariners and GMT etc... Bi-Metals generally are easier to obtain and can be purchased with a small discount.

About 6 weeks ago my Stainless Steel White face Daytona turned up at my local Jewelers after a 4 year wait. The Daytona in S/Steel retails for £4300. The Jeweller in question advised me whilst I was collecting the watch that he would pay me £1000 over what I bought it for if I did not collect the watch and take it home... I was tempted but considering I had waited over 4 years ....£250 a year seemed like waste of time.

Would you expect to get discounts (on the high street) on watches like SS Submariner dates or GMT IIs etc?
yes I was offered about 10% off a GMT II in the middle of last year without having to ask if the price was negotiable.

Did your discount depend upon the payment method?

Sorry for being so nosey but I lived in Hong Kong for 20 odd years and got used to 'haggling' for watches. In the U.K. i'm not so sure how successful this would be, and what discounts to expect.

We hadn't got as far as discussing payment - I was looking at an IWC and while I was trying it on the salesman gathered up some others in the same-ish price bracket, including a Panerai (which I bought) and the Rolex. Without me asking, he said 'this is £x but we could do it for £y'. I didn't really like the watch to I didn't pursue it, but given that he offered about 10% without any haggling, he must have had more room to maneouvre if I'd pushed him.

this might sound like a stupid question to some of you, but why do they have waiting lists for rolex watches?

are the types of metal used in them very scarce or are they hard to build meaning a back log of customers?

Rolex carefully control the supply to keep the price up.

very nice of them so they could sell dozens more if they wanted to but this way the 2nd hand market stays strong as well.

Eh? Dozens more than the 700,000 or so they already sell?

Cripes!

So...there's a waiting list for Rolexes now?

I just went into Ernest Jones and bought one! Twice!
But you are the Don though!!

Happy New Year sir......quaffed a bottle of '96 Veuve Sec for brekky on the 25th - absolutely beautiful bottle of plonk.

O/T, sorry chaps!

Shocking hijack! Did the Veuve not make your Shreddies taste funny?
You get used to it after a period of time.

hi been in and around watches for twenty years .got nice collection;rolex omegas early cartier the rarer frank muller ;bought and sold many over the years..never bought a new one though..bought omegga automatic dynamic as recently as two months ago for 12o pounds it is as new and much more desirable in my oppinion than newer models..if you serious about daytona in steel i suggest second hand market as opposed to new ..i know of one at a very good source in chester well under list price..as far as i know new watches will always drop in price from new ..it is only the older more rarrer watches that i would ever consider payin over retailers list price;;in over fifty purchasesof watches in recent years i have never once come across a dealer not prepared to make a cash discont even on my limeted eddition chopard mille immiglia a discount was given..also never come accross a fake or replica watch at any dealers..its their lively hood at risk;

Go to Dubai and buy it there. You're sure to save more than the cost of the flight.

My Breitling cost £1,800 in Dubai from an authorised dealer vs £3,000 in the UK.

totally agree on the brietling!! my other half got one and it was a lot cheaper over there, however beware of them ripping you off when youbuy a rolex, i've got one now, but when i was looking at the ladies ones they were charging a hell of a lot more, and weren't looking through official Rolex paperwork! the bretling shop however is great!

I believe I saw a bi metal (didn't look to close once I saw gold in it), Daytona in my local jewellers a month ago:

www.upchurchjewellers.co.uk

I bought my submariner there, they are an official dealer, no harm in giving them a call.

I kinda did actually, was thinking of getting one in the summer, when I see how the 1st or 2nd quarters have gone this year for me, financially

Thanks missy.

i bought a Breitling Navitimer World back in May last year, list price of £3,250 (metal strap) and i just asked for discount, i said how much i could get one off the internet for and would he match it.... i said i didn't want to buy off the net, but would if i had to... he got his calculator out and 15 seconds later, matched the internet price of £2,650

i'm thinking of selling it, or trading it in so i can get a Daytona.... not sure how much it's worth now though? confused

Okay, I have just visited Hatton Garden, to find that there are no authorized Rolex dealers!

Is there a list of dealers on the web (I have looked without success)?

I think that my plan will be to go for the best deal that I can get on a new one.
