I've been wearing a simple Ellese sports watch that my father bought me as a birthday present for over ten years now and I thought it would be a good time to treat myself.

Obviously not going for the silly stuff but not going to scrimp either.

I'm thinking something like this

or this

Just in case I visit space anytime soon!

Now I know these are quite obviouse choices but any ideas?

Btw - I have slender wrists so watches like Breitling are out.

They're both nice. I would say it depends on if you want a plastic or metal bracelet.

Have you seen them both and what they feel like on your wrist?

It maybe a little on the large side but theres a Limited Edition IWC available at the moment that I was spying in a jewellers window earlier in the week that is very very very nice indeed.

Given the choice I'd go for the SpeedMaster as I don't really like the TAG Re-Issues, the originals are a much better option and a much better made watch.
I'd guess at this price point they'll all be ETA movements so not a great deal of difference in quality, just boils down to what looks nice on the wrist. scratchchin

The Tag straps can be specified. I'm not sure about the synthetic trap but pehaps black leather would look nice.

I think if I went for the Speedmaster than it would have to be the steel bracelet

Do you have to have a new watch or would you think about a used one?

I'd go for a used but I live in Dubai and I have a feeling that they'll be thin on the ground.

Also, I'd be very wary about them being fakes here.

The carerra was fecking massive when I tried it on my fairly dainty wrists.

So I brought a Monza instead.

Make sure you try before you buy else you may be a bit pissed off with a grandfather clock on your wrist...

I've got the Speedmaster, I highly recommend it.

The only things to note are:
1) It's a manual mechanism so you have to remember to wind it.
2) The lens is plastic (to stop broken glass floating around space) so it scratches fairly easily. Although apparently they can be polished out quite easily.

I have the seamaster which i have worn and abused every day.. hey presto no scratches, omega are great and keep their value really really well !
Which ever watch you buy be sure to get the chronometer self winder which isn't as acurate as a battery powered one but are far more sought after.
my next upgrade is the omega planet ocean with the orange bezzle it looks well sexy !

I have a Speedmaster Professional "Moon Watch" in my collection. No watch has a more exciting history in my opinion. Mine has a crystal back so you can see the movement - but these are quite difficult to get hold of and cost about £500 more.

Speedmaster every time.

The full size speedmaster is quite chunky but there is a reduced size automatic available quite a bit cheaper if the full size looks ridiculous on your wrists.

Cheers chaps - I shall head off to a top notch timepeice emporium this week and see what thay look like on.

As an aside, my company do the PR for a retail group and they just launched the Jacob & Co watches over here. Jacob Arabov himself turned up. Have to say that even if I was the richest man in the world, I'd never, ever wear one of them - hideous imo.

This is a bit out of left field but have a look at the Seiko "Prospex" line of watches.

They do some divers watches for £200 that are tank-like and look good too IMHO.

Don't get me wrong those are really nice watches but that sort of price point is that funny territory where you're paying a fair amount for something where IMHO the actual mechanism isn't anything to write home about, so it's mostly about something that looks nice, which is fair enough if that's the criteria.

This is rather nice too but as it is over GBP 10k, I'll probably have to give it a miss!

I'll be honest and say that looks and the brand are relatively important - I have a great watch that has lasted over 10yrs without missing a beat apart from a few battery changes, but I do believe that as men we only have a few things that we can wear that can help us stand out - cufflinks perhaps, nice shoes and maybe a nice watch.

Check out Panerai too, they have some very nice watches.
Re Omega, my Bond seamaster is back at omega service in southampton at the moment as i wanted a new dial fitted, new hands, & a bracelet refurb. The watch went to them on 28/12/06. I just had the quote back this week. They will not carry out any repair/restoration work unless you agree to a full service on the movement, an additional cost of £165.00.
The watch should be back to me at some point in march.
