According to the latest Octane mag (which is a cracking read this month) the IWC top gun is a special edition based on the ceramic pilots watch.. so you can get basically the same without the limp-wristed back by getting the standard black model. If only I had the £££

oh i thought it was the normal ceramic pilots watch until all this stuff kicked off!

that is so wrong.

I can't believe that someone at IWC sanction this...

"Uh, Lars, I've had this really great idea...."

"Go on, Sven, I'm liking what your about to say"

"This is crazy, but what about making this watch totally fecking pathetic?"

"Tell me"

"Let's put 'TOP GUN FIGHTER WEAPONS SCHOOL' on the back! Our customers will be loving this"

Did that conversation actually happen?! laugh

Are you saying IWC decided to use a Scandinavian design consultancy?.

As to the watch, it really does say "I'm on the lookout for a 'wingman' " IWC usually more elegant than that. (As long as you choose to forget the Prada thing from a couple of years back..)

Mrs Mastiff gave me this for my 40th.....

and I am absolutely thrilled with it.

I have never been one for watches and didn't even wear one for many years, but I have always wanted one of these and sort of "saved" myself until I got it.

I now wear it every day.

clap Lovely thing. I was this >< close to getting one last year but in the end went for it's cousin,an Anonimo Millmetri (partly because the Ferrari tie-ups were so god awful ugly they put me off the whole range ).

thumbup I've got the same watch, but on a black strap. I went in to buy an IWC Spitfire Pilot's watch, but tried a few others on and kept coming back to the Panerai.

I couldn't think of any typically Swiss names! But you got the drift!

Lovely watch - your wife has impeccable taste. Did you ask - or just receive as a total suprise?

My wife buys me the most bizarre gifts. The other year she received diamond earrings, I received a ceramic pair of 'owl' figure book-ends. Uh, hello? What the feck are these?! I received them with good grace of course, but WTF? The year before - a silver tray. I'm not a butler.

I digress - I'm just envious that your Mrs has such imagination and taste.

On the watch front, I bought my wife a Chanel J12 in white for her birthday as a 'fun' summer watch. Bling - yes. Bit naff - yes. But she loves it!

What should I expect for my b'day I wonder? A silver sellotape holder? A chocolate teapot?

Has to have the blue and red bezzle - as all the copied (well most) seem to have the black bezel.

Mine has the black/red bezel. I preferred it because I saw too many with the blue/red bezel. I wouldn't have bought a Rolex if I were concerned that someone might think it was a copy.

yeah, mine is blck/red too, had a nice blue redone but it was kernikked at a rather nice hotel, fortunately I sqeaked and got a replacement on their insurance picked the replacement up from a Bonhams auction, if you like watches/mechanisms they had some amazing pieces for sale £££££££££££££££££££'S though.

Out of all the watches I own and have owned over the years, I have never had a Panerai for more than a few days... However, I think my tastes are changing and I do now rather like the look of them.... I might feel a purchse coming on...

It was really a total surprise.

When I think back I suppose I had given enough "hints". Like when she had to drag me out of the Panerai shop in Florence, or when I paused the film and shouted "there's one!" like a flippn child whilst watching Transporter (I think it was), but I am a man, and I didn't ever think that she would take the time and effort to locate and buy one for me.

Always been like it, glider flights, track days, weekends away etc

I think she may actually be trying to bump me off

Thanks again for the nice comments.

I agree - one of the things I like about the Panerai is the crystal back so you can see the movement.

At the Lange & Sohne exhibition they had a 10 x enlarged model of one of their movements - seeing it at that size makes the actual size one even more impressive.
