One for the Horolophiles(?) - Not whinging or ranting, but why did you decide you chose to spend far larger sums than average on a watch?

Mine was to celebrate my first year in business. Not something I will ever be in a position to do again, but at least I have a reminder of my old company and the hard work.

I got it for a good price in Dubai and it's the only form of jewellry I would ever wear so I thought I should have something a bit better than a Swatch.

Why do you want a bigger cough? Does your Girlfriend think lung cancer is sexy?

because money burns a hole in my pocket and I like the look of them. Also as an investment. (2 of mine are now worth substantially more than i bought them for)

Indestructibility and stuff.

Oh. Expensive. Never mind. Anyway, my latest purchase is this:

Cost me about sixty quid.

One day, I'll buy a fancy watch - but until then, I need one that keeps good time. A Waveceptor is in the pipeline.

My watch was £30 from Argos

Went into a poncey jewellers the other month because it needed a new battery and they wanted to charge £45 to change the battery

EDIT: oops - wrong thread

Umm I wanted one....

And as I got engaged at about the same time as I had the cash, I got one as an engagement present. This of course meant it cost me twice as much as it cost her, due to the dimond ring, but i still get a nice watch (and a life of hell).

again wedding/engagement present... and as said because i wanted one!
(not in the defence tone it sounds like it's in..)
why do people have 42" tellys, why do some people pay twcis as much to live in a converted barn as a new build house...

...why do people buy cars other than toyota corollas (auriseses!)

...because they prefer the engineer/style/character...

I was irritated by the cheap good looking Argos watches because after 6 months I had to buy new because they were covered in scratches and my acid skin had eaten away the thin nickel electroplating revealing the awful brass substrate. I spent several hundred pounds on a proper watch about 10 years ago and I'm still wearing it every day. In the end I spent less by spending more.

Same with shoes. One pair from the high street every 6 to 9 months or spend £250 on a hand made pair. I'm still wearing them every day for work after 6 years and there's many years left in them.

Exactly the same reason as to why I appreciate expensive cars.

I always find it puzzling that some PH'ers, who I assue are car fans, find it so hard to understand the motivation behind purchasing expensive watches.

I freely admit I like the finer things in life. I like good wine, collecting art, antiques, going on expensive holidays, and spending thousands of pounds on watches.... I don't see why I should apologise for it, or even have to justify it tbh.

I cetainly wouldn't class myself as rich, but then I don't live like a pauper either.

You either 'get' watches or you don't.

Amazingly it seems the people who don't are actually angry at the people who do.

Probably because they're poor.

You can tell a lot from a person's watch. And by their shoes.

you could apply this to anything:

why do people go out on a friday night and spend their money vomitting? because they want to do it! i/(we) prefer not to drink WKD and eat kebabs...

i make my own sandwiches for work..

i spend my money how i like. if other people want to have a Lorus watch from argos and spend their money on stella that's up to them!

I guess it's because a car is seen by most as something you use and get a tangible benefit from whereas a watch will always just tell the time.

As another poster said it's something you either get or don't get, personally I do, I figure it's simply a case of live and let live.
