I think generally non-watch folk cannot distinguish between the artistic and utilitarian facets of a watch. All they see is the utilitarian, and thus anything above a certain amount of money is deemed too much as a watch's primary purpose is to tell the time. As long as you can read the face, it's job done.

Yes, but how artistic are most high-end watches, really? Most are not "hand-made" per se, so much as constructed, piece-by-piece, on production lines.

Buying from an individual watchmaker on the other hand is a different matter. There's a lot of nonsense associated with watches, all IMHO, of course.

Redundancy.

Got the papers, cleared my desk, walked into the jewellers.

Oddly enough, if you look up the word 'Style' in the dictionary, the above is one of the recognized definitions.

my dad bought mine for my 21st birthday. He's always liked watches and ive got it from him i suppose.

I wanted something special as a gift that I would keep forever and maybe one day pass on to my son (if i have one that is!)

some of my mates get them, one got a Breitling for his 21st, others dont.

each to their own, innit!

Does a Tag Aquaracer count as an expensive watch?

My wife bought it for me on our honeymoon.

I like the look of it, the glass doesn't scratch like on argos watches and if it breaks I can have it mended.

This means I get to keep the watch my wife gave me forever.

My watch isnt expensive but I spent the maximum I possibly could justify on a watch at the time. Its a lowly Tissot PRS200 but its a start and I intend to get steadily nicer ones as I can afford them.

Guys generally dont wear jewellery or adorn themselves in anything expensive at all. So I think I nice watch really isnt much of a big deal compared to what's draped across some women.

Plenty of people who have cheaper watches may spend £200 on a pair of jeans. I wouldnt. Its not something you buy often, it has a decorative function as well its practicality. I think a nice watch is a must have.

how much does a watch have to cost for it to be considered expensive?

i mean, for a student £300 may be expensive, whereas plenty of people on here could spend %k without batting an eyelid!

Would a £1000 watch be expensive regardless of income?

No, definition of "expensive" is always related to disposable cash (or income sort of). My watch cost about £250 - that was expensive for me when I bought it, I'd class it as pricey for me now, perhaps in the future it'd be pocket change.

I used to buy 50-100 quid watches and found myself getter either bored of them, or it broke and so changed it every 12 months or so.

When I realised that, I figured that if I was to get something really, really nice (IMO) and kept it for 10 years, I could spend a grand or so and break even.. Granted, it’s a big up front, but whatever the case I've used that justification and the misses believed me

I'm actually at the 10 year point with my current, so looking for something now.... I love those URWERK and have been looking at them for some time now, but just can't seem to justify selling my left kidney for one.... wonder what they are second hand as I imagine that sort of watch would be kept in pretty good nick....?

Well... what do you expect... it's bad enough having a very expensive watch, a hairdressers car AND a tiny cock... then I'm accused of being a bum bandit!

I don't know.

Whats the world coming to?

I got a rolex for my 21st ('just' a stainless oyster date so nothing too flash). It was my Dads so has double sentimental meaning. I am 30 in a few days time and have just bought a 70's Omega speedmaster 'moonwatch' as a present to myself.

I don't know why I like them - why do some girls crave diamonds?

never had any watch never mind an expensive one. Until about two weeks ago.....

I've read so many posts on here about 'why do people buy expensive watches' and seen how aritated people seem to get at others who buy expensive watches, so I decided to see what the fuss was about, started looking and realised how beautifull these things are and how much detail goes into one, so i bought one

my choice of watch was based on looks and quality and the fact that it needed to look right on a chunky arm hehe

and now i will treasure it and keep it for the rest of my life (unlike my Timex Ironman that I use for running)

I would say it's all relative and best judged by the owner.

For example, I brought a new car (Boxster so I cut hair, have a small knob and my life didn't quite work out right etc.) and I didn't really blink at what it cost, it was a lot of money to me, but at the same time I was happy with what I was buying and the reasons I was buying it.

When I need a pair of trainers I baulk at paying £70. Not because it's too expensive in so much as I can't afford them but because IMHO a pair of Puma's or Nike's aren't worth £70 so I consider that to be too expensive.

With watches, I do understand why people buy expensive ones, but as with cars some people buy out of passion and appreciation and some people buy simply because of aspiration and the "Look at me I have a Rolex/Tag so I've clearly made it"

So I have a Rolex Datejust that I brought about ten years back that is still worth pretty much what I paid for it, and a £70 Seiko Divers from Japan, I never wear the Rolex because I prefer the Seiko, I'm not bothered which cost.

Because my grandmother died and left me some money which I wanted to spend on something tangible that would remind me of my grandparents and that I could keep in the family.
Now everytime I look at it I think of them.....(and then think "sh1t I'm late!"

Yep. I have one on a nasa-esq velcro strap and really love it. I actually bought the GF a reduced size speedmaster yesterday!

I love the look of the speedmaster, the lack of date on certain ones had put me off though and the modern straps have shiny bits (I recall) which I'm not so keen on, I was doing a bit of research and over the years there has been some interesting variations - the 'speedsonic' or similar (tuning fork watch movement), the TV face variations, coloured hand LE's, all in all an iconic proper watch in my view.
