Will somebody please explain why any watch is WORTH such prices..?

If you need to be told, you'll never understand old boy...

Yes, yes, I understand the manufacturers' here comes another sucker thing...

But, why is a small machine WORTH as much as this..?

Quality of craftsmanship, rarity, quality of materials, design, brand image, longevity etc etc...

Because people are willing to pay that much. It really is that simple.

Quality of craftsmanship

May have some merit, but can't modern production methods equal human skills?

Nuggs said:
rarity

But that's a function of high price, not value

Nuggs said:
quality of materials

You have a point there, but what benefits do precious metals bring to a machine?

Nuggs said:
design

Don't get that one, they all look pretty much alike

Nuggs said:
brand image

Keeps the price up, not the worth

Nuggs said:
longevity

Not a measure of worth...you can buy 150 £15 watches for the price of one "exclusive" watch. You're not going to live forever...

I just don't get it...if I spent such a goodly sum on a watch, I would feel I'd been had for mug....

Is there something else I'm missing..?

Have you been approached for investment? I don't think they're a listed company.

I assumed the OP was looking to invest in a watch, in the hope that it will appreciate in value?

I don't know much about jewlerry but I would be very cynical about it offering much of a return

A UK consortium of existing top brands that identuify new brands with potenetial to mentor and support during the early years. They tend to favour 'style' items so chose a clothing line, a perfumer, a jeweller and in this case a watch maker to support each year.

Of course they may have their own interests in Bremont????

BTW, I was only thinking of buying a watch, not investing in the company although buying a few shares could the cheaper and more profitable option if they end up flying because of the hype rather than the product.

An older Patek watch is coming up at a Christies auction, estimated price £600,000. A Breguet Perpetual Calender wristwatch from 1935 is expected to fetch in the region of £100,000. More recent watches Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshort £40,000 - £60,000 and an A Lange & Sohne tourbillon the same.

I would agree though, I would be very suprised if a watch from a new company with no history would be an investment! But I think they are great looking watches!

I am a watch snob par excellence, and have a healthy level of contempt for arriveste brands on the whole.

But, these chaps are submitting their entire production for C.O.S.C certification, which I like.
And the chaps that did that Ewan Mcgregor long way round jolly wore them (or are being paid to say they did).

I'll keep an eye out.

If nothing else, I like the idea of grabbing a few on ebay for peanuts in a couple of years if they go bust.

could you tell me more about this consortium, I'm planning a luxury brand of my own, and would appreciate a conversation with anyone in the sector.
