Well blow me down with a feather. Never noticed black faced monters have white fingers, thought they were the same as my orange one.

A closer look at the Accutron - for no particular reason:

How big are they really? And how heavy?
Chunky but not Panerai-big. Heavier than a plastic G-shock. What are you used to?
Breitling hercules, 44mm bezel, 49mm including crown, 220g.

I assume those cotton reels are really copper windings?

They are indeed, on each end of a 'tuning fork'.

Dropped on the mat this afternoon, a '72 Accutron Spaceview:

Gears, wires, windings, electric hum, second hand sweep, no crown - what's not to love?
Love that, on my wish list.

Here's my Hummer from 1968:

Have a look here:

http://www.elektron.demon.co.uk/accutron.html

The only watch with a true continuous sweep second hand.
Bulova were the first but others exist, here's my Omega f300 Tuning Fork:

I thought that was the Seiko Spring Drive?

Do the tuning fork ones not "tick" 300 or 360 times a second or something?

Definitely not as big or heavy as that thing!

Thanks Andy and in the spirit of mutual backslapping, loving your 214 Spaceview, very much want one of those.

The Seiko Springdrive is a wonderful thing but consider, vintage Bulova £100, Seiko Springdrive £2000.

Mind you, I'd accept one as a gift smile

No, they don't tick at all, the second hand spins smoothly at 1 rpm, and instead of the tick- tock or the tick- tick (at one second intervals), it just emits a Hum (hence the name 'hummers' )

i really have to acquire a spaceviewyes

So what makes the hum? I thought that was the little balance wheel thingy as it enagaged each of the the little 300/360 teeth.
