The Bulova tuning fork watches *do* tick just like a balance-wheel watch. They just tick at a *much* faster rate - much smaller ticks. At around 360 Hz, this is 360 ticks a second and it looks just like a 'smooth' tick-less rotation. Omega then upped it with some very clever technology before quartz turned up with 30,000-odd Hz and higher accuracy.
I've got a Spaceview too
The real issue with Spaceviews is authenticity... Bulova only made a few, and they've become collectible - so some dodgy chaps in the USA have been butchering 'other' Bulova tuning-fork watches, removing the dial, and bunging on the chapter ring, changing the hands (or painting existing ones)... etc.
Mine looks different to andy_s's watch - principally in the hands - and that may be a giveaway as to whether mine is a bitsa, or his is a bitsa...
This website may help, but I think they're cool regardless, and don't *really* care if mine turns out to be a 'conversion'... it looked pretty damn accurate to me when I bought it, but it's definitely different to andy_s's example!

The only watch with a true continuous sweep second hand.
I thought that was the Seiko Spring Drive?Do the tuning fork ones not "tick" 300 or 360 times a second or something?
Springdrives on the other hand DO move smoothly and continuously forward against a quarts controlled brake...
My 214, now on a less chunky strap.
No Springdrive, yet.

I'd be very surprised if mine was a 'from the factory' one - if I understand correctly Bulova made the Spaceview originally as just a display for dealers to show off the movement, they sold the display to demanding customers and converted some existing watches to support demand, Bulova then produced the Spaceview as a distinct model. Mine looks like a bitsa, it cost 'bitsa' money and I haven't seen one like it so I presume it's either been made up at some stage or I've got a bargain - thing is, like you say Cyber, it's cool regardless of distinct provenance, it was made on the cusp of the digital age and as a tiny electro-mechanical device of that era (when a man flew to the moon with the computing power of a small calculator aboard) it's definitely of interest for the future and in its own right.

Nice to see more retro watches featured.
Toady I'm wearing a recent acquisition fresh back from having a little problem fixed (Cheers John!), it's a 1968 Sieko Bellmatic.
I've been after one of these for a while now, and love the look of these earlier models.

Merry Christmas to all! Miss Cyberface and me decided watches were appropriate Christmas presents this year, and we're both feeling like the cats that have got the cream...
Me: I've been wanting one of these for AGES but kept on getting distracted by other things - made for a perfect present (once I'd got the damn thing working - was a very glum Christmas until I got the crown stem back in the keyless works properly... as always, Chinese QC...)
Don't be put off by my comment - this watch looks a MILLION dollars, is of superb quality, the strap BHI put on is a very good leather complete with deployant (with subtle BHI engraving). Yes, if you were being uncharitable you could call it a Breguet homage because the dial style is quite clearly influenced by the Classic Breguet range, but BHI are credible enough in their own right so their crest and initials on the watch make it quite obviously not a fake or a knock-off. In terms of 'feel' - apart from the minor problem I had initially with the crown, it feels incredibly good quality and better than the photos give justice to. It's not a cheap watch (they're around the £500 mark IIRC) but to get a tourbillon with power reserve, in a classically designed case and dial, and for the watch to 'feel' high quality (you know what I mean, I'm comparing here to genuine Breguet, IWC, Rolex, JLC, etc.) - I think it's bloody marvellous. I love it!
I went a bit overboard on Miss Cyberface, taking Asterix's advice and running with it - and she's rather chuffed as well. She will have to get used to winding her watch... hopefully this will get her 'into' proper watches (I guess that's why JLC use the 'have you worn a proper watch?' advertising tagline) but she already loves flipping the watch from one face to the other It's Christmas, so she's got it on the sparkly side today Apologies for duff focus... Canon Ixus all that was to hand and we're just popping out for lunch...
