Update part 3, spoke to Duggins and they guessed around the same level of cost as Rolex themselves, so looks like I'll have to bight the 400 quid bullet!
huytonman - If it is a Red Sub, please take it to Rolex. Your Sub is probably worth over £6k so I think for peace of mind and a proper Rolex Guarantee, it would be well worth it. In addition, you would not have to undertake a service again for 5 years smile

Yes, that was also my conclusion given the value of the watch no point in skimping, I have tried so called reliable and experienced watch repairers in the past with sometimes poor results; having said that I did once send an IWC DoppleChrono back for its inclusive two year service to the dealer in regent street and the first time I used after its return the chrono button flew off..bit like car servicing sometimes even the official guys get it wrong!

+1

That's a rare watch which you're lucky to have.

Tell you what, to save you the bother, I'll swap yours for my 2 year old and freshly serviced 50th SubDate LV.

hehe

2-year old sub that required servicing. Soovy tell me you are joking.

Anyway, I have already agreed with huytonman to swap my bi-metal sub with his red one. Only thing is that he doesn't know yet biggrin

Just got it done because I love it, and wanted a couple of tiny scratches taking out.

£380 for a service, new glass and crown on an explorer II, via Rolex. Wait will be about 10 weeks and that Sinn is calling.....

I'm in the same boat - 10 weeks for a service, so I reckon the Sinn was an easily justifiable purchase. That and the fact that I like it.

£220 for a service plus £70 for a new clasp ( crack in the old one ) plus an 'optional' £175 for a new watch face as the old one is faded (!) I don't think so.....I'd rather have the 'patina' of the old face and save the dosh! So not too bad....glad I did buy the Sinn now, it may take some time to get it back.

Hi Phil,

Just been down this road myself.

I have a 1977 S/S Sub bought from new that was sat in the back of a drawer for over 10 years, when I came across it, it would’nt run.

Checked with various AD’s (as a matter of interest Whittles @ Preston was the cheapest quote of all the ad’s I contacted) But I was told because it was a Sub it would have to be sent back to the factory for pressure testing!

I did’nt want the factory to get there hands on it just in case they changed things ie The dial/hands, I have heard that this is a matter of course and you do not get the replaced items back.

So in the end I have found a chap in Manchester called Alex with plenty of Rolex experience and values the watch in its original condition.

His business is called Perpetual-Time and can be found on Google.

All work carried out by himself at a fraction of time & cost.

Regards

Philip.
