One of these, as a designer he will probably love the style and cudos of it:

You can find them for around £300 if you look.

I have it!

One of these:

Hamilton Ventura. A True design classic.

From around £300 and up.

I have one in my collection and they are very cool with an interesting history.

I'd go Russian or Japanese for that money...

Poljot or Seiko.

As everyone else has said, it's all down to personal taste and there's no right answer.

I like the Tissot, a lot.

Thanks for all your input, guys. As you'd see from my last post, we had to make a decision.

Whilst I agree a watch is very personal, i expect the meaning attached to the watch will be more important to your son.

It may also spark an interest in watches. My wife is getting me one for my 30th which isn't until next year, but my God how seriously am i now taking the search?!

I'm also amazed at how intersting the search is turning out to be. We're not spending a huge amount but even so its opened up a whole new area of interest for me.

ALternatively, he may love it and use it to tell the time and think no more about watches other than the nice one his Dad bought him.

Well, I thought this thread was closed until we presented him with the watch we had chosen.
He was honest enough to tell us he didn't like it so we said "OK, we'll return it. Choose one yourself" and gave him some of the links you lot had provided.
He came back in no time at all, having chosen this one:

Well done, Andy, and thanks.

Tokyo Flash eh! They have some very cool and unique pieces.

Glad to have been of help, and that everything worked out okay!

Hope he wears it in good health.

I'm late 30's and I'm afraid, those watches look like someone more 50+ I'm afraid.

some thoughts from me.

Tissot PR50 £185

TissotPRC200 £230

A bit more than the budget

Hamilton Jazzmaster £380

Some cheaper 'fashion' dressy watch

Hugo Boss £150

Hugo Boss £225

I bought myself one of these for my 30th Birthday, many many years ago now (But I'm not really that fashionable)

Raymond Weil Tango £550 - I got mine for £350 in the sale at Selfridges.

Yes, and the OP asked if anyone had any other suggestions if not one of the four. I was offering some alternative suggestions for a 30 year old Web Designer in the £150-£300 range. What did I miss?

ETA: I see he has made a decision. Sorry. I did miss that. It is a nice choice - and the right choice to agree with the OH (I'm approaching my 18th anniversary - so know that all too well).

Eclectic taste your son has - not sure what your wife thinks of it mind you, given you comment wink Personally I don't like it at all but then I'm not 30 and I hate gimmicky things but if he's pleased with it then that's the only thing that's important. Funnily enough my own son, who is 26, just purchased a watch as a joint Xmas/birthday present from me and he chose a Hamilton Jazz master which was suggested previously. Goes to show how hard it is to guess what others will like.

Get something Classic. And Swiss if you can afford to spend a bit more (Yes i am talking rolex, omegas etc). Possibly look at pre-loved.

Find out what he is currently wearing and get something similar to that.
