One further consideration if youre looking for a Seiko dive. Many (though not all) of the Seiko 5 models will only be water resistant to 10 BAR / 100 metres. These arent proper divers watches, rather theyre 'divers-style', and unless theres one that you particularly want, theyre better avoided as the prices are similar. There are 5s which are marked 'Divers 200m' (or 20 BAR / 200m Water Resist) and these are better, though still inferior to the SKX007/009 and Monsters, in my opinion. More of the 5s seem to be made in Japan still, which does make them more attractive, whereas the Monsters are now made in China with a Malaysian movement.....

I've not reacted to the "made in Korea or Japan" thread before but I frankly can't see the difference. Seiko open a factory in a lower wage econony but still applying their own strict quality control. I see this argument all the time on the Nikon forums and having had Nikon lenses for nearly 30 years some are made in Japan and some elsewhere but they all work just fine. The argument holds no water for me at all; my Monster is more accurate than my IWC but that is perhaps the luck of the draw since the IWC is still within COSC standards. Nikon Japan make bad lenses sometimes - my £4,800 200/400 had to go back because of a back focus problem. Just my take on the matter. Happy Xmas.

ETA; Oh, and going back to the original post the Japanese model cited is out of stock anyway! I wonder if they make the 007 there any more; it's quite an old model now.

Stick your thin wristed arms into your deep pockets and buy a nice Breitling or you're not going to fit into your new working environment biggrin

I think that youre missing the point. It isnt about quality. There is no suggestion that the Malaysian watches are inferior, simply that theyre less desirable to an enthusiast.

To a horologist, yes - to the average punter like myself, it makes no real difference where it was made and whether or not it is Quartz.

If I can stick it through on expenses, I'll get one. If not, no chance! biggrin

But the automatics have a sweepy second hand. That makes all the difference to me.

"Sweepy". Define please. All my automatics operate in the same way, be it Swiss or Japanese or in this case Korean. It's the same movement so how can it be different in operation? Does it turn anticlockwise because it is from the Orient?

I got myself a SKX007 a few months back, got it for £129 in total with Jubilee bracelet, watch is running fine and has taken a few knocks, keeping good time too.

Think he was comparing to Quartz.

I know this looks totally like a Sinn, but I stumbled upon the SNDA65 the other day. Great looking thing. It's a quartz though, so it ticks.

As in, an auto will have a sweep second hand rather than the tick of a quartz...

Seiko abandoned automatic chrono movements a good while ago; citing quartz's accuracy over mechanical actions as the reason. You can still buy an automatic chrono if youre prepared to stump-up for a Grand Seiko though (at Daytona money!)...
