Hi all,

I finally received my replacement Seiko snk 803 but they could only send me it in cream / off white. Shame it's the only colour I didn't like.

I know this is a bit of a piss take and bends the rules but would anyone on here be interested before fly back to Germany on Wednesday? 40 quid and I'll post it for free. Pm me if you want it.

These are a great watch at £50. I wear the green version, snk 807 (?), 805 and 809 are blue face and black face. All come with a nylon strap, I've had mine for 2 years now and it looks fine. Mine has become my watch of choice, the Seiko Alpinist that I keep for high days and holidays sees less and less wear. The case is 37mm which sounds small in these days of 40-45mm being the norm, but it doesn't look small. I do have narrow wrists, bigger watches look silly on me.

It's a good price indeed but they are unly £56 delivered by Amazon, with a US supplier asking $60 and a raft of them BIN from Ebay at similar money, so I'm sure that a similar deal is available if you want one.

I have a left field choice, look up HMT watches. Most are manual wind, I got a "Janata" for less than £5, used and refurbed in India. New strap. That's disposable.

I got one for cheap as chips which gets the odd outing as a dress watch. My only manual wind watch and a nice antidote to the modern larger watch for certain occasions.

I agree 100%. The strap on mine is beginning to look a little tatty after 3 or 3 years so will need replacing soon, but the watch looks smart and (I think) quite classy. You're right about the size too - doesn't feel or look small.

I wouldn't recommend anyone bought a watch from one of the ebay sellers based in India. There are too many franken watches. The reason that they're nearly all redialled is that the original dials have rusted in the high humidity / on sweaty wrists.

That said, for a fiver, who cares?

I bought a brand new limited edition HMT white pilot (holy grail amongst HMT collectors) for £35. Including delivery to the UK. They ain't expensive watches.

Interestingly, the Hindustani Machine Tool Company make two things, watches & tractors. Only in India.

That was my thinking. They may well have led a hard life, but it's a nice thing and if it employs someone to sort out a non-functioning item and post it off to me, then as far as I can see that's all to the good. I really like the face on the one I bought, and if it's a Frankenwatch I don't care, they are hardly in short supply. In fact I bought another one for a mate, it has the numbers in Arabic, which is interesting. Another fiver, he really likes the thing and uses it when he's out cycling and the like, when he doesn't want to risk damaging a more expensive watch.

It's very liberating to be able to take the thing out of a drawer, set the time, wind it up, and be done.

I hadn't heard of the Pilot, that may be another to think about. A new one for £35 sounds like a winner.

I think HMT may be modelling themselves on BSA. Guns and then motorcycles. Erm...

Damn you mikeveal, thanks to you I've bought another watch!

It's an HMT Pilot with black face and green numerals.

Is it collectable? I don't care. Is it nice to have? Looks like it. Was it expensive? No, about £4 after the Paypal/exchange charges. I reckon I'm good for it, it even has a new leather strap.

Caveat - some of the sellers in far-flung parts of the world may not be the best organised. I bought one HMT and a strange cheap broken quartz watch with a cheap strap landed. I complained to Ebay and had a refund, they didn't ask for a return. For a fiver, I don't care, but for a bigger purchase I might worry.

JB watches are selling the SNK 809 for £60 at the minute and if you use AUGUST10 you get an extra 10% off bringing it quite a bit closer to the magic £50. Note to mods, I do not work for and am not affiliated to JB Watches! smile

So got my HMT watch, nice little thing but have a question for those who have one or have a wind up watche in general....when i wind it up, it only goes for about 30 seconds then stops again, should i wind it for like a minute or more? If i wind it the opposite way it doesn't work at all..is there a fault or am i doing something wrong?

Thanks

Just keep winding it (clockwise) until it won't wind anymore (sometimes up to 30+ turns). You won't break it. If it still doesn't run then you may have an issue.

Yay or nay?

I normally wouldn't bother with Aldi watches, but can't resist an Automatic and they come in square too

Wooden watch for £20 on ebay.

Let's hope it looks this nice when it arrives. It's verawood, which doesnt always look that nice due to green grain running through it, but I preferred the tone of this to the other woods that it comes in. At £20 I could always buy another one made from a different wood I like the watch.

We'll see.
