For reasons that I'd rather not go into, I've no longer got my seamaster as a daily wear, looking for something to replace it, it's got to be: automatic, water resistant (not actually going to be diving in it, but it'd be good if it'll be OK in a shower), similar size to the SM.

Preferably available from Goldsmiths as I've got a load of Clubcard Vouchers which I can use to get about £300 quid off, plus on top of that I've about £300 to spend.

Liked the look of this as something a bit different:
Tissot Chronograph

Or these were more of a direct replacement fot the SM:
Oris Divers
Oris Divers - Pepsi bezel

I quite like the pepsi bezel when I see it, but I'm not sure if I'll continue to like it when it's my daily wear. The other problem is that the Oris watches are a bit above budget and if I were to have £500+ to spend I think I'd go for a S/H SM again.

Does anyone have any opinions on them, I really like the Tissot as I've always fancied a chronograph, but I like the ruggedness of the SM. I'll obviously go and try a few on, but just wondered if anyone could offer up any alternatives?

Thanks, CH

Why not a Tissot diver?

Good suggestions both, I'll have to actually get down to Goldsmiths, I expect there'll be a couple of decent(-ish) watches on sale too. Tissot are OK though aren't they - a quick search of the forums suggests that there are no major quality issues with these any more than any other (more expensive) brands. Although I realise that the SM is a step above what I'm currently looking at. What are the thoughts on Oris? I tried on one a few years back and don't recall being particularly blown away by it, but I think I was trying on a Speedy at the same time, so I can see why.

Now that I'm working to a price point things are obviously going to be different!

Ta, CH

I've had a couple of the Oris TT divers.

They punch above their weight quality wise.

Chris Ward watches are strong in that price bracket.

Although you will be forced to choose between auto and quartz chrono. They do not have a automatic chrono.

Beaware the cheaper automatic chrono's, sub £1000 that is. A lot of them are based on the ETA/Valjoux 7750 movement which has a number of plastic parts around the chrono hour hand. Timezone suggest sparing use of the chrono feature, or if you can't resist, frequent servicing.

Tissot looks nice.

Beware of sending it to Tissot for servicing, mine has been with them for 5 weeks and they reckon it will be another 3 or 4 before they even look at it! They have made me think twice about buying a new Omega as its the same group

The repair HQ in Manchester is where my watch is! For the first week they denied they had even recieved it, they only owned up when I told them who had signed for the watch when it was delivered to them!

But I like my PRC200, I also have several vintage Tissots' so I like them, just dismayed by the service

I'd vote for an Oris over Tissot. I've always thought Oris offer the best pound-for-pound value, especially with their own inhouse movements.

Can you spend the vouchers in other High St AD's?? Was thinking Ernest Jones (although their customer service is s*&t!!!! - I know from painful experience) as they stock Hamilton which has a good range.

To be honest, I'd probably never use the chrono feature (so why bother? I just like the look of them), also saw that Goldsmiths have a couple of Oris watches in the sale which bring them closer to budget, only 50m water resistance though which is a bit of a risk in the shower isn't it?

Williams on bracelet
Williams on rubber strap

Think I prefer the one on the bracelet with the orange numerals!

No, it's Goldsmiths only... and the outlet stores and airport stores are excluded... I'll niop out to the local one at lunch and see if they've anything that sparks my imagination... so tricky to get an idea from the website how they actually are on the wrist.

The Oris calibres are usually modified ETA or Sellita movements, rather than being true in-house movements like Rolex, Zenith or JLC. That notwithstanding, I agree Oris punch well above their weight. I love mine.

Because Tissot dont make proper divers watches any longer. I have mine insured against a Longines Hydroconquest.

Oris for me: although the Valjoux calibred Tissot is the only decent watch that they make now...

Isn't that a contradiction, 'they've never let me down' and 'needed seeing to' hehe
