No offence, but you're buying a Rolex for the wrong reasons. You should (IMHO obviously) buy a watch because you like it, not because of brand snobbery.

The process should be:

  • Bloody hell that's a good looking watch
  • Wonder who makes that
  • Wonder how much that is
Not, what's the cheapest way to have a brand on my wrist.
Indeed; but if people really followed that process, Rolex, Breitling, and especially Tag would likely go out of business. And Omega would immediately drop the Seamaster smile

Really? you could apply the same logic to say every car above the Mondeo or Focus. Do you see BMW and Mercedes about to go bust?

Don't be silly. smile

Firstly, there's subjectivity in the process described - looks.
Secondly, people clearly don't follow such a process - which was kind of the point.

Really? I still do not get the point you where trying to make then as even with your follow up post you seem to be strengthening the point I made rather then saying its silly. Or are you some kind of demigod all knowing character that knows that no one buys a sub or a seamaster because they like the look of it and it fits their needs?

I'm with NJH on this one. You really make no sense here whatsoever. I followed the process and bought a Rolex. I know many others who have made similar procedural moves and bought their choice of watch.

Please help me understand your theory of companies going out of business if people buy what they like.......

Edit: Ah ha!.... I just sussed-it out.....(I think).... You mean people would be buying looky-likey mickey mouse watches from China based on aesthetics alone. Well, perhaps the process should include an investigation into the quality of the source as well.

Far simpler than that. smile Initially, I was being gently provocative, and suggesting that most Rolexes, Breitlings, Tags, and Seamasters are unattractive. I'll indicate the humour more clearly next time - maybe a wink instead of a smile ?

However, since you brought it up, how often do you really think that people follow such a process when choosing to buy (say) a Rolex, versus choosing to buy a Rolex for its brand values? (You may well be an exception.) It's a bit like the Porsche argument - how many owners really buy a Porsche because they love its looks, its racing heritage, its fine engineering, and that throaty rasp of the flat six?

Same for me. First Rolex I ever held was Ralphy's (TZ-UK regular and pro uw photographer) tt sub. He told me how he bought it 25 odd years ago (still looked great), and wore it for something like 750 dives (still looked great) and still sometimes dives with it. He also showed me the stretch on the bracelet where it got snagged climbing back into the dive boat yet somehow managed to hold his 80+ Kg + dive equipment without breaking or springing apart, contrary to nonsense ppl spout about the "weak" centre links and spring bars. This is the thing you learn from guys like Ralphy and other professionals who have made their life out of the sea. No other watch has so much ill informed nonsense spouted about it. Learning about the history and all that has been very important to me.

One of the most classic e-slap posts I can remember was on this very subject by another TZ-UK regular, seadog mike. Someone spouted that pro divers do not wear Rolex subs etc. only idiots buy em etc. etc. all the usual nonsense. Mike replied, well why is it I am sat in here in my sat chamber with a Rolex SD on my wrist looking at several other guys wearing Rolex subs. It was priceless.

Any chance of Mikes surname, just wondering if I knew him, I have been in the offshore diving industry for 35 years.

Email it to me if you like.

Sorry Vipers, he is someone I only know of as a regular poster on the forum and as someone my mate Ralphy seems to know. You should join up there is a great bunch of guys from all sorts of backgrounds. There is another sat diver on there, ISTR handle SD funnily enough, a guy who works on the equipment (he was going to attach a Breitling Seawolf to a UAV and see if it really has 3K water resistance, don't know if he did it in the end), a guy that works for SOC, many military or ex-mil types and then desk jockies like me who rarely go much more then 3 feet underwater.

Seeing someone write 'Rolex entry level' makes me cringe.

Sorry.
