Omega seem to be the king of special editions - Beijing, Vancouver, Moon Landings ( ;-) ).

I was just wondering if they are worthwhile given that they actually, imho, seem, well tacky. Is this the common view?

Dom H, whats the industry-dealers view on resale?

I think the Olympic ones are fine, and will probably be bought by people with a link to the games in one way or another. IIRC there's 2010 Vancouver pieces, so that's not so many to go between all the organisers, coaches, athletes, etc.

They seem to find a moonlanding anniversary to celebrate every year, and I think they're wearing a bit thin now tbh. Or if they don't have a 'mission' to celebrate, they celebrate how long they've been making the watch for! biggrin

The 007 link is really naff IMO. Just knowing you have the same watch as James Bond should be enough, having the 007 logo on the second hand is complete overkill!

Limited / Special editions can be great if done the right way, I think Omega do them a little too often though!biggrin

After having seen some great pictures of the Tag Monaco with Gulf stripes I decided I really wanted one. After a bit of searching I found a store that had one so popped along to try it - really disappointed, it felt tacky and poorly made.

I looked at the Omega's and the more trad ones were great, some of the specials were a bit OTT and the Bond theme is starting to become a bit tired.

By change I was walking past Berry's in Leeds and saw a few Panerai Ferrari limited editions. Could not help myself, I ended up with a stunning Rattrapante chronograph with carbon face and brushed steel case - the 488th of a run of 500. I am now under pressure from my good lady to sell the Breitling Navitimer Montbrillant Datora that it was supposed to replace!

Some of them are quite nice, others are just 'cashing in' IMO.
I'd love a Snoopy Speedmaster, but the Apollo 13 (is that the current LE?) leaves me cold. It's an awful lot more than a standard Speedy for not a great deal IMO.

The only one I've seen that makes me think "never in a million years" is the 007 one with the 007 logo as the second hand.

It looks too much like a kids watch to me, I'd rather wear a casio!!

Omega do way too many special editions & they are made in far too greater numbers to really appeal to me in general.

As has already been said the 007 Seamasters are totally naff.

I do like the 40th Anniversary "Patch" & the Sapphire Sandwich Speedy Pro's though, although the second hand premium on those is nowhere near the premium when new AFAIK.

Generally I'd say if buying new, they are a good way to loose an extra few quid if you ever sell on.

I have a Snoopy Speedmaster and I love it :-)

It's their only special edition which actually appeals to me - the rest, IMO, are a bit naff.

It's subtle, different and actually ties in with real events (the snoopy award/apollo 13...etc).

I used to own an Olympics Speedmaster 1932. I thought it was kinda special and understated, it wasn't the tacky one with the rings on the face though. The only thing that would make you realise it was a special edition was the rings engraved on the back.

Would love a Snoopy Speedmaster though. Best special edition ever!

I just cannot fathom for the life of me why it would be great to have a cartoon dog on your watch. Can anyone enlighten me?!

Omega was awarded the Snoopy Award after the watch was used to time the boosters on the Apollo 13 re-entry.

I can't help but agree with the general feelings above. Special editions are fine but Omega do too many for them to really be special, the 007 ones are a bit naff (IMO), the space speedmaster ones are okay but a bit too frequent.

I'd like a Snoopy though, I like the contrast of serious time piece and cartoon dog!

Let's here it for the Solar Impulse! Surely the best Omega limited edition?

Firstly, it's not simple another Speedmaster with a few cosmetic tweaks. It's a stand alone model in its own right. Titanium, GMT complication, date, co-axial movement, chronometer-grade, chronograph function, waterproof down to Lord knows what depth...People have complained that "they could have a Rolex or two for that money." Well not a Rolex that can do all that they can't.

Omega make a lot of Speedmaster ltd editions(Moon/Missions/Anniversary/Schumacher etc), these tend to depreciate at the same levels as the base model the watch is based on. The Snoopy are good news, these are keenly sought after and sell for over list when available....
Tacky? No.
Re-sale? Does vary..

What might a very good condition Snoopy with box & papers go for then?

I have the 007 Casino Royal one and prefer it to all the standard Seamasters, they all look the same but the subtle differences on the 007 one l really like, l want to buy the Quatum of Solace one with the PPK face, that is very nice, if anybody knows where one is being sold l would love to know.
