Two watches seen briefly at two airports at the weekend. Both being worn by people, so I didn't get a perfect view.

The first:

Round face, big (45mm+), black bezel, steel case, yellow strap. The yellow continued round the edge of the case, so it was sort of sandwiches by steel. Round crown, square buttons (2?) on the same edge.

The second:

Round face, big (45mm+). Steel case, black face, three(?) sub dials, the one at 6 was slightly larger. Each sub dial had a silver/grey ring around a black face, and the one at 9 might have ahad a red gradient, like a chrono dial. I thought the logo might have been AP or GP, but I didn't recogniose the watch from either maker. The strap (black leather with two ridges running lengthways) was held on with large screw-ended bars

Thanks all.

they do 101 variants in different colours, but the sandwiched metal case carrying on a strap, and the eye catching strap itself is very Hublot.
The also sponsored Man United for a while, probably after realising that half their trade was from footballers.
I do like them, but they are very expensive for what you get. There is a black magic, which is ceramic, PVD, and a "phantom" type black dial which is a little more discrete, but Hublot currently don't seem to make a "Big Bang" as a base, all they do are special editions with big pricetags.

Second one sounds like it might have been this, or a variant thereof:

Probably because the replica guys have Hublot completely sussed... since the Big Bang is merely a cheap 7750 movement in a fancy case, the 'top-end' replica Big Bangs are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Hublot themselves sent out a famous letter to ADs that purported to point out how to spot a fake... and all but admitted that the top-end fakes are impossible to tell without dismantling the movement.

I guess going 'limited edition' with gemstones and precious metals (which the replica guys can't afford to replicate properly) is one way to stay one step ahead. Personally, I'd prefer it if Hublot actually innovated and did something with the movement to go with the price tag... but that's flamebait as it'll start up the old replica argument again. Having seen the comparisons between the 'cartel' replica Big Bangs (Andrew, Joshua and their (his?) many aliases and websites) and the real things, and both in the metal, I simply assume anyone wearing a Big Bang is wearing a replica. There's no way I could tell (unlike replica Rolexes, for example, which are bloody good these days but not *perfect* as the movements aren't identical).

And you really have to question the value of a genuine Big Bang if the replica is identical in every component and material (the best replica Big Bangs aren't cheap, mind you, last time I was told, since I have some mates who are 'replica geeks', they were selling for around $400). However that Lemon special edition isn't out as a rep yet, so if I see one out and about, perhaps I'll consider it real hehe

Second watch, proper guess don't shoot me... Audemars Piguet Royal Oak City of Sails Alinghi?

The pic is of a platinum version (I couldn't find a better picture to show the strap that to my eyes resembles "black leather [albeit rubber] with two ridges running lengthways"). The dials are clearly 'wrong' - but the Chronograph (second picture) has black dials, a splash of red at 9, AP, and 3 dials - so I think it's quite close to your description smile

^^ AP did a few Alinghi special editions for the sailing team, so I reckon you're right (may not have been that exact model, but all of them had a red swirl on the 9 subdial) - the two metal bars holding the strap on give the game away for a Royal Oak, I reckon...

Close... The ridges ont he strap I saw were raised rather than suinken. As you say, the sub dials are wrong. The numbnerals were in a grey/silver ring, and the centres were the same as the face (black). The dial at 9 is too busy in this pic. The splash of red (if there was one) was on the silver ring, not the whole dial.

I'm not certain it was AP or GP, but the logo looked small and that kind of shape.
