30th this year - What watch to get out of these two?
Discussion
As the title says really...
Come December time, I will be officially 30 years old.
Thought I'd mark the milestone by buying myself a watch. I have managed to narrow it down to two watches but cannot get it down to one. Both have their pros/cons and both are roughly in the same ballpark in terms of price. Watches in question are:
IWC Portuguese IW500107 SS with white face/blue strap
Rolex Daytona SS with white dial
Only reason I'm asking now is that if I decide on the Rolex, I'd have to put down a deposit pretty quickly to be in with a chance of getting one in time. My AD reckons he can get one within 8 months. I think it may take longer...
Just wanted to know what would be 'the one' to get out of them two. Any advice/opinions would be helpful. Thanks

Nice dilemma to have, I have both models!
My Daytona is a zenith SS, and is my daily .
The IWC comes out for night times :-)
If I had to choose, I prefer the Rolex... but only just. I find it a great everyday watch.
edit : I got the Daytona for my 30th and added the IWC at a later date.

I'd have the IWC as the special and Daytona as the daily.
Try www.watches.co.uk Might not be brand new though...

Hmmm
Would rather use a Rolex AD for the Daytona, but that does involve a long wait. Don't want to pay over RRP for it, thats for sure.
Think I'll go with the IWC, and chuck on a deposit for a Daytona at some point later. Whenever it turns up, it turns up. I can wait.
I wouldn't wear either as a daily, as it would just get finished at work. This will be an evening/weekend watch, worn at most two or three times a week.

They were not willing to take down my name for the SS. Said the list was 'long enough' already.
From what I've read on TZ-UK (another watch forum) general consensus seems to be that is an attempt by the dealer to keep an artificially high interest level.Plenty of places seem to be selling SS ones at list or very little premium.
SS Daytona is a decent daily beater - I really liked mine when I had one. It goes with any dress, formal or casual, and is a practical watch.
Apart from ONE fatal flaw - it doesn't have a date.
That eventually killed it as a daily for me. I really need a date. Why Rolex didn't take the opportunity to bung a date on the Daytona when they retired the El Primero and designed their own chrono movement, really puzzles me.
A Daytona, with white dial (like my old one), with a date squeezed in somewhere (it's possible without getting Breitling-messy - look at the Breguet Aeronavale and Transatlantique - the Aeronavale doesn't have a date, the Transatlantique does. I have a TA flyback as my 'Daytona replacement') would be a perfect daily wear (apart from the high price, but that comes with the territory). It's not even too big and vulgar - they're not just popular because they're popular, if you see what I mean. They're damn good looking watches.
Go for the Daytona. It'll get more wrist time than the IWC, and you can indulge in evening-wear expensive fripperies later. If you can't afford both, get the one that you'll wear the most.
