hi all, is there an easy way for a layman to spot a fake watch. reason i ask is i have just found out i have a bit of money comming my way from a distant relative that's just died,(not enough to retire....shame). i have always liked watches but only to look at in jewlers windows. now i have the chance to buy a 'good' watch i decided to buy a second hand one. if i was going to look at one is there an easy way to tell if its a fake, i dont know yet what make i will get, but have read in here that fakes are getting worryingly good and i dont have the experiance to spot one from the other. oh the budget will be about £5k and will it be a good investment over the years.
thanks....tom

Just buy from a reputed dealer, and pay on a credit card.
A lot of expensive older watches should have been serviced and there should be paperwork to prove. Just check the serial numbers match.
If you don't know what you are looking at, don't buy from evilbay.
Search and PM Dominic H on here. He will guide you and help you spend that money wisely!

^^ That.

If you're not sure and new to buying watches don't bother with eBay. Buy from a dealer, by far and away the easiest way.
Any ideas on what you want?

yes, maybe a digital one, lol. i have seen some nice ones but their name escapes me, they are sort of square and look like the gauge out of an aeroplane. they have big numbers and pointers so good for my eyes, no idear on prices though, so might be beyond my budget. i dont want anything with lots of fiddly buttons, or a face covered in dials as i cant read them, and dont need them. just looking for a 'nice' watch while i have the chance to afford one.

Personally I wouldn't get a B&R as I think they are overpriced for what they contain. I would be looking at a used JLC, IWC or a Blancpain IIWY or a PP if you can stretch the funds a bit..

That'll be Bell & Ross, good selection most of them within your budget.

Does B&R really say you know watches?

It's really quite simple. The shorter hand is the hour hand, the longer one is the minute hand and the thin one is the second hand. The 3, 6, 9 and 12 are exactly where you'd expect to f... oh, wait, that isn't what you mean, is it? jester

(Sorry, it's one of those Sundays.)

I know what you mean, though. Take the basic Sinn 656. Same dial layout, similar hand style. Utterly gorgeous.

Zenith Chronomaster.

Saw (and handled) one of these the other day. Steel(?) case and black face - absolutely beautiful piece. It's a decent size, but not overly large.

ah, so B+R maybe not the best then. i will look around the interweb for something and come back for opinions, all i want is a watch that shows me the time and date. i dont fly a plane, sail a boat, go diving, or plan to walk to the north pole, so just a simple quality watch will be ok.
cheers for your thoughts people.....tom

If I were you I would get myself a nice '70s -'80s 5513 Rolex Submariner. Simple, beautiful and it will almost certainly keep rising in value. As far as the fake thing goes, either make sure you buy off a reputable dealer or from a respected forum, like VRF. Once you decide what you want, post your needs on here. I'm sure someone will be able to help you. Enjoy your search smile

Have a look through Blowers and European Watch stock lists to give you some ideas of what is out there. You will get a better watch for less buying s/h and a reputable dealer will take a mail order watch back if you don't like it or it's too big/small when you receive it

Hi Tom, I think you misunderstood my reply. I wasn't suggesting you buy a fake at all, I was suggesting a watch like in the picture. A vintage Rolex. I did just spot that you wanted a date as well so perhaps a Sea Dweller would be better. They do do a Submariner date but the SD is prettier & slightly more collectable in this configuration.

The vintage Subs and Sea Dwellers are also an excellent investment and will probably outperform any savings account you may have. smile

If you want to train yourself to spot fakes, look at websites like the link above and other vintage watch sites and download pictures of real watches you like. Then do the same from any number of fake watch sites you can find on the internet and compare the two. 95% of the fakes out there are pretty obvious once you know what a real one looks like. Just keep looking at real watches, you'll soon get your eye in.

Another make you might like to take a look at is Panerai.

Plenty of Panerai to see at the above link smile
