Can you haggle on this?.. new Cartier Watch
Discussion
Hi
I am on the process of probably buying the following brand new. The RRP that is being quoted is aprrox £7200.
Its the PASHA XL CHRONOGRAPH WATCH
http://www.cartier.com/show-me/timepieces/w3108555...
Will Cartier entertain a discount or if I walk into Harrods or Selfridges will they be willing to negotiate.
P.S Any other suggestions for watches in this price range? It has to be brand new.

I've always negotiated on new watches, cartier, bretiling, bvlgari. usually if you ask for a discount they'll give you one.
try all the places you have mentioned along with some of the watch specialists on Bond street, Wempe were good.
Also, for a watch of that value consider a short flight and see how much it is duty free.
Good luck.

Knowing that you will lose 35-50% of the watch's RRP simply walking out the AD's door, should give a good sighter on the size of discount you should be seeking. Cartiers just do not retain their value, although that may not be material to you if you are looking to keep it for a long time.
No criticism of the watch nor the brand, but with a few notable exceptions (Rolex being the obvious) expensive watches, especially those from so-called "fashion" brands do not keep their value. Breitling are not particularly good either to be fair. If it were me, I'd be looking at used watches of the flavour you prefer.
Weeeeeeeeeell, Cartier started out as a watchmaker, he was a contemporary of Patek Philippes but his sons and grandsons expanded the empire and so today it's more a jewellery/fashion luxury brand, with inevitably the lose of focus on watches. But their movements are all from the top 'brand' houses - I'm not sure whether Cartier do in-house movements as well, I think not but happy to be corrected.
The more traditional designs like the Tank are probably considered 'watch' watches as opposed to the more extrovert or design led creations. I think it's fair to say that there's probably a view that you could get something more in terms of fine watchmaking if you spent your cash elsewhere, but as with all things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it depends on your particular perception and what you want out of it.
I wouldn't like to rec'd anything, as all of this is out of my range anyway and tastes vary, but I'd certainly cast my eyes over Jaeger LeCoultre and Glashutte Original for example, before committing. You'd be assured of a fine piece of watchmaking.

To the OP
Yes you can haggle on that and you should expect up to a 20% discount without to much of a problem.
I wouldn't purchase that particular model if you are looking to retain value. But if its a wedding gift then you should be choosing what you want first, with depreciation second......you want this as a lifer i'm guessing?
"If" you want to stick with the brand "and" you want to retain value then the classic Tank Francaise would be a better bet.
(and as a side note, if retaining value is what you're after then i would personally avoid buying new Breitlings).

Just my opinion, but that's really not very nice. £7K too! Are you sure? That sort of budget opens up all sorts of options. You could buy 2 or 3 very nice watches with that sort of budget.I am on the process of probably buying the following brand new. The RRP that is being quoted is aprrox £7200.
