Find me a watch challenge - 7K budget.....
Discussion
Following on from my earlier thread what suggestions do you guys have on a watch:
My criteria is:
Has to be brand new.
It cant be a combination of watches.
No yellow gold watches. In fact I would prefer steel or platinum (though doubt that would fit my budget)
No Rolexs'(is the plural Rolexi?)
Has a RRP price of around 7K.
This watch will be a keeper forever. The style of watches I like is along the lines of this:

(thanks CraigW for the earlier suggestion.

mmmm...with that budget Id probably go for the new Zenith re-issue

A Dornblueth closer in style to the IWC is the 99.2 here . No date though.
I don't know the price new, but a link for used is here @ $6370 - not a recommendation, just a link.
I'm still prevaricating about actually ordering a 99.1.... but the idea of being able to spec a hand-built watch from a (apparently) well respected watchmaker in the old tradition is strong

Assuming this thread follows on from the Cartier wedding gift thread, then you have very generous inlaws! My money would be on something from Glashutte, IWC or Jaeger leCoultre. Some ideas (used but you get the idea):

Any of the above would be something you'd be pleased with no matter how long you had it, real craftsmanship.
I think someone on here has one of these:
And the real place for bling - hand carved of course:
For a sports watch that Zenith looks good - 1/10 sec chrono indeed!

Some excellent suggestions ...keep them coming
I am very much leaning towards an IWC at the moment though. How do people compare the IWC Chronograph to the IWC Automatic?
I may be biased, but you can't go wrong with an IWC. Your budget would pretty much get you whatever model you wanted.I am very much leaning towards an IWC at the moment though. How do people compare the IWC Chronograph to the IWC Automatic?
What about JLC's though? Very nice indeed.
With that sort of budget, have a look at a Breguet
http://www.breguet.com/eng/Type-XX-Type-XXI
The Type XX and XXI are pilot style watches.
If you get one, you'll be in good company (Napoleon, Winston Churchill et al)

That would be my choice too, I think that it is Asterix that has one. His is beautiful.I think someone on here has one of these:

The Automatic has an in-house movement whereas I believe the Chronometer does not. That may or may not be a factor for you.I am very much leaning towards an IWC at the moment though. How do people compare the IWC Chronograph to the IWC Automatic?
I have an Automatic and it's a fantastic watch, couldn't recommend it highly enough. The way the sub-dials on the Chrono cut off the numerals doesn't look great to my eyes, but I know some people think it's one of the nicer features of the watch!

I'd be inclinded to go with the timeless elegance of the IWC as well.I am very much leaning towards an IWC at the moment though. How do people compare the IWC Chronograph to the IWC Automatic?
However, you say it's going to be a keeper, but do you mean an everyday wearer-keeper..? or as a dress watch-keeper...?
I'd say the IWC is definately the latter rather than the former.
I treated myself to a lovely IWC Spitfire Double Chrono at the end of last year(someone will post a pic....) retailed for about £6200 offered the AD £5000 cash which they accepted ........
absolutely love it
New to fine time pieces, and found out loads on here! spent a few days in Dubai trying loads and loads on didn't really want to spend that much but couldn't get the IWC out of my mind ..............ended up buying it from Berrys in Nottm who were great to deal with .

OP: I love the IWC you post a link to in your first post and IWC is always a manufacturer I'd love to own at some point. I _almost_ ended up with a Big Pilots watch and part of me will always wish I'd had that over the Franck Muller 8885 C CC DT I eventually got. (c'mon they're not that bad...;)).
Wife gave me choice and I went for the Muller in the end for a more distinctive look over my other watches.
But if I were you and had that budget and was looking for a watch now, I'd seriously take a long hard look at the Dornbluth and the Glashutte Original that have been recommended on this thread. obviously look at their whole ranges. They really are proper timeless classics and there's something appealing (to me at least) in the way they're a bit 'unknown' to most people.
That's not to detract at all from the IWC - which is also stunning.
DO let us know what you decide.
