Frankly I still think you have some more narrowing of choices to do. On one side we have the chunky "wear it anywhere" Master Compressor and on the other a series of dress watches which look better when wearing a suit. As an IWC owner, albeit not in this class, I love them but I also love the Hometime and Reserve de Marche. The Geographic for me falls between the two stools of chunkiness and dressiness so that would be the first to be "binned" here. Mind you, at this price level there are also a lot more watches out there to consider!
I totally agree with you with the Geographic not being as dressier but would I be right in saying the Geographic still wouldnt look out of place while wearing a suit?

Yes I agree there are lots more potential choices out there but to be fair when it comes to watches im reasonably ignorant and have very limited knowledge in them - I am hopefully going to start learning about them slowly but unfortunately I dont have the comfort of time when choosing this watch.

Will you lot just stop it with all this posting pictures of beautiful watches...

I have a 40th birthday coming up early next year and am trying to decide on a watch... Every time I open up a thread in this forum it makes it more complicated.

My prerferences out of this list are the JLC Master 8 Days, (very) closely follwed by the IWC, though if it came down to handing over the money I am not sure I could finally decided between the two.

Good luck and post pics when you decide.

Perhaps I expressed myself poorly. The Geographic just looks a bit too complicated and fussy - to me at least - amongst the other dress watches. I love the simplicity of the Portuguese without a big bezel around it. Another thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is the watch size. I have small wrists and hands and the 42mm IWC I wear is perfect but I couldn't go any bigger but at the same time some of the JLC watches are pretty small and if you have medium or big wrists then they would look out of place. In the JLC range the Master 8 day is 42mm, the Home 40mm and the Reserve de Marche a mere 37mm which is pretty tiny and more female than male size. The Portuguese is 41mm and that is all watch face, unlike the Master Compressor which is a largish 44mm including the bezel. Sorry to complicate things but this is an important acquisition and needs serious consideration. The problem with sites like this is that we tend to complicate what might at first seem to be a simple solution. Perhaps the only way out would be to go and try all the watches on and see which one looks best on your wrist.

Purely out of interest - which of these watches do you think would retain the most value over say 5-10 years

Sorry to hijack the thread, i did vote for the JLC Master Compressor Chronograph smile

Yes...I would be interested to know that...even though I have no intention to ever sell this watch it's good to know these things.

£4800 I think.

I reckon the IWC would keep it's value the most...

Exactly.. probably the wrong way to look at, especially if it is a keeper, but i for one, would be hesitant to buy a £5k watch which can be bought for £2k - 5 years later (this is purely an example - figures for illustrative purposes only smile )

You are absolutly right..The size of the watch is an important consideration. I dont have huge wrists so really dont want an oversized watch but at the same time I would want a reasonable size watch. While I have already tried a couple of watches on from my list, im finiding it really difficult to find a place that has all of them so I can compare them next to each other and quite frankly some of the JLC's are a little on the small side.

I've had a black-dialled Portuguese Automatic identical to that pictured for 4 years. I wear it to work 5 days a week and I don't think you'll have any problems with using it as an everyday watch, if you want to.

That said, I've voted for the JLC Master 8-Day, because I think it's absolutely stunning and I think it deserves more votes!

The Master Compressor Chronograph is a great watch, but it's very, very different to your other choices.

Just to confuse you still further, have you considered a JLC Reverso? Some stunning watches there, also.

I've also got a Dornblueth 99.1. It's a fabulous watch and the experience of deciding what features you want, discussing the build with Dirk, getting updates and photos while your watch is being made and knowing that you've had an input into the process is extremely special and one I'd recommend unreservedly. Bear in mind that it can take up to a year from order to delivery, though, so it may not be an option if you're under time pressure.

I went for the Master Compressor. For a watch that costs £x,xxx the inconsistent font used between the date wheel and the rest of the face on the Portugeuse is unforgivable. Cheapens the whole watch, IMO of course.
