I wonder if anyone on here can help please, I have just come back from a trip abroad where I decided it was too far to walk back to the hotel room to take my watch off and went ahead and wore my Breitling Navitimer World in the sea and in the pool.

I have since noticed inside the crystal screen there is condensation, I am concerned now that I may have damaged the mechanics inside the watch with salt water, aren't these watches supposed to be waterproof to a certain extent? Their price tag suggests certainly so!

Does anyone know if my watch is faulty as its still under warranty or whether they are simply not made to brave a journey into some water!

Cheers.

I think that the Navitimers are rated to 30m water resistance. I am pretty sure that this does not cover swimming as an acceptable activity but things like washing your hand/rain water should not be a problem.

As far as warranty is concerned you could send it back to Breitling and explain that the watch has suffered from condensation and maybe just omit the swimming part biggrin

Guys please jump in to correct me where necessary!

Your watch is water resistant to the specs below, and has a 2 year warrenty from date of purchase if bought from an official Breitling Dealer or AD.

Standard Levels Of Case Protection & Suggested Usage

3 bar/30 metres/3 atmospheres/98 feet
General everyday use. Not suitable for swimming.

If you have neglected to tighten the crown and water ingress is detected through this ring/seal your warrenty is nul and void.
They don't have a screw down crown.

You can try taking it back to the dealer where you bought it (assuming it's still under warranty) and saying that you havn't been swimming in it. I think you're going to take a hit on this one though. It was rather silly to go swimming in a £5k watch that isn't designed for swimming in, so you'll just have to put this one down to experience I think.

But that's a nonsense! How a watch can be described as waterproof to 30M and yet you are not allowed to swim wearing it???

So if my Tag is waterproof to 300M can I take it to 30M?

They're tested based on a complex ISO rating based on pressure and there's loads of specific timing and stuff, not based on actually being used in water at that depth for ages. If your TAG is rated at 300M then you'll be fine swimming in it. The navitimer world doesn't have a screw down crown or chrono buttons, it's a bad idea to do anything more than wash dishes with it, as the OP found out to his peril.

For reference of the ISO ratings:

You may find they call it water resistant, until you get too proper divers watches and they use the word waterproof.

PS. Dont shoot the mesenger, I think its wrong too.
The word waterproof hasn't been allowed for years, they never use it.

"The International Organization for Standardization issued a standard for water resistant watches which also prohibits the term waterproof to be used with watches"

Rotary are a joke in more way than one nowadays, they just produce "homages" and argos specials.

You mentioned neglecting to tighten the crown. One can't tighten the crown on a navitimer world, it doesn't screw in.

I'm with Disco on this one - it's not woth doing the dishes with this one! Lovely watch, but you need to get it to a good watch person, or AD, to get this sorted asap.

Sorry....

Ouch, I had absolutely no idea that this would be an issue!

Thanks for all your help guys, I bought it from Watches of Switzerland, I'll try taking it back to them as its still under warranty!

I have always worn my Tag when I go swimming and i've never had a problem with it leaking water, what model do you have?

Aquaracer Chronograph.

I know that I can take it swimmining. I was asking can I take it diving? I'm one of the very few diver's watches owners who ACTUALLY DIVE wink
