They're pretty easy to get for a small premium to list now....waiting list or not. I was trying to find a specific white gold Daytona for a friend who was visiting from abroad earlier in the year, whilst I was looking I was offered SS watches if my friend was interested in one instead.

I know of a guy who bought a black faced Daytona in SS, BNIB at list MINUS VAT in the UK, not so long ago! He is a very good customer though, as I understand it!

They had both the black and white faced SS ones in Manila last week, only problem is the exchange rate at the moment 500000 peso's is equal to 7.2K , will wait for my name to get to the top of the list I am on, unless the pound gets a lot stronger!!

I maybe shouldn't say, as they almost certainly don't want to be barraged with enquiries, but it was a well known dealer on Bond Street.

For reference though, and off the top of my head, he has bought in recent months/ years: IWC Big Pilot, 2 x Portuguese (8hr PR, so the expensive ones), a big Ingenieur and a Milgauss as well as owning a Panerai and Bulgari before... So, a good customer! And when I say 'know of', he is a good friend of almost 10 years, so it is no fairytale!

I much prefer the steel and gold so 2nd hand represent a far better buy for me, probably around £ 6 to £6500

Steel and Gold looks v.nice. I'm presuming (happy to be corrected) that the majority of Daytona's are SS. As a long term investment keeper, would it not be wise to put your money on the S&G. Thinking in 10-20+ years time, the market may value the rarer S&G higher?

Obviously all imho, and happy to be corrected as i have zero knowledge of collecting watches.

I love the look of the bi-metal especially with the white face.

Anybody ever wondered how they justify an extra £2750 for a bit of gold? I'm assuming there's rather less than 3 ounces of the stuff in there. Or is this sort of question seen as churlish in watch circles?

I've no idea but your observation is correct, as this premium does not appear to be reflected in the residual values.

I firmly believe that the 'quality' watch industry is quite cynical when it comes to pricing. They ruthlessly exploit the remarkable tolerance of their customer base.

Same as the car industry in many respects.
