I know this has been done before, but what's everyone's favourite road in the area?

Mine - although I think it's actually in Essex - is the B1051 from Stansted Mountfitchet to Thaxted. It's not the widest or best sighted road around, so you need to be careful in places, but it's quiet and very, very twisty.

New Road from Great Chishill down to B1368 and back around Langley. That is an... interesting route.

A507 from Baldock to Buntingford is good. Not sure if it's the best but it's good and the one I drive most frequently these days.

Have the improved the road quality yet as when i drove down it (albeit last year), the surface was very bad.

Another one ive found is go out of Hitchin towards Barton then as you get to the 'Live and Let Live?' pub, take the turning on the right/just ebfore the church. Some nice lanes down there

Great road. It must be brilliant at 4am, but coming through at sociable hours I always seem to get stuck in traffic. In fact the last three times I could swear it's been behind the same slightly wheezy Peugeot 405 estate. Weird.

We've done this before but always a good discussion. And staying strictly in Herts.

For me the A507 is the best single stretch. Surface is pretty good right now and its a shame its only 8 miles long.

B656 from Hitchin to Codicote , B1039 From Barley through Great Chiswell is fun, B1004 from the Bishops Stortford to Much Hadham is a brilliant little stretch.

God I had some fun on that road in the clio, those undulations are a blast when you're honing at 1am.

The a507 is brilliant but you need to go at obscure hours to get a clean run.

B656 out of Hitchin is also a fun run, feels great nailing the sweeping uphill left hander on the way back biggrin

Thaxted road is too heavily trafficked by cars and especially cyclists to drive too fast on. The best road is the Duck End to steeple Bumpstead Road B1057. Great surface, good sight lines. Awesome if your car handles well

Good points , though makes it worth getting up early enough, but the key problem is ..........they are in ESSEX.

I often drive back home from where I live near the Flying Horse in Clophill to Essex, the route I take is...

Shilington
Henlow Camp
Baldock
Buntingford
Brent Pelham
Clavering
Newport
Thaxted
Great Sampford
Finchingfield
Weathersfield
Shalford
Bocking

A great selection of roads found purely by chance (and the PCM funnily enough) and some great scenery. Mapped it here in Google.

I realise this is not just Herts, but it's a good combo of Herts/Essex smile

They are not brilliant roads for going fast, but there are some excellent "sighted" sections out on the lanes north of Baldock (Newnham, Ashwell, then coming south to cross the A505 and in to the windy lanes around Sandon etc).
I like just going out for a potter some times. The roads break over the hills and you get some fantastic views of the countryside.

Did you note the unmarked camera cars that are used down there - keeps me down to 99.9 leptons when its so easy to do a lot more!

And YEAR??? Hope the driving is better than the spelling.

I drive the A507 everyday to and from work and it's the best road, easy!!

It makes getting up extra early, when required, that little bit easier knowing i'll get a clean run on that road!!
