Anyone live in Welwyn Garden city? House advice
Discussion
I live in Ware so I know WGC from shopping etc. but not much else. We're viewing a house there on Saturday and I was wondering if any WGC locals can tell me anything about the area. It's the house below.

I'm an occasional visitor to WGC but my sister has lived there for years. She's a straightforward person, here's her response:
That's not the best bit of Welwyn and the nearest secondary school, Sir Frederick Osborne does not have a good reputation. It's not the West Side and that part of WGC is not as desirable as where we are. If he wants to move here tell him to look out for houses near Monks Walks school, Knightsfield area or Stanborough area.

As others have said, not the best part of town. Salisbury Rd / Knella Rd / Woodhall a lot of ex council (and still council) stock. Having said that they are not bad size houses, not too far from town centre and it's not that expensive for WGC. Pays your money and all that.
I worked for the council as a building surveyor many years ago, and this did become a dumping ground for some of the more undesirable families, however it is better now that this housing has been sold off into private ownership.

Hi,
I use to work for Connells Estate Agents in WGC a few years back as a Weekend Sales Negotiator, in the main I went out doing viewings. I did the job for a bit of extra cash.
The pluses and minuses with Welwyn and houses. Some of them seem quite small inside, especially some in the cul-de-sacs off Howlands and some in the Panshanger area are tiny. They tend to be 3 bedroom, and whilst you can get everything in, they just don't feel all that big.
The best picks of the bunch are Daniells and Westlywood. Big houses, sort of open plan kitchen diner, big bedrooms with unusual open high ceilings, but downside is they have some weird heating system. Some of which have been changed to central heating, proper boiler etc. But I saw one given a real good refurbishment and it was stunning, and they've got good sized gardens.
Much more similar to the Heronswood style, same sort of age are the houses in Great Ley or around that area. Would need more work doing to them, to get them modernised but they're a good size and solid.
Hope this helps, it has been 8 years since I worked for Connells.

If you're looking as far north as Hitchin have you considered Baldock?
I appreciate I'm only a private tennant rather than a homeowner, but proportionally rent and house prices are slightly less for Baldock than the surrounding towns, and the schools are rather good (Knights Templar in particular).
The old 3 bedroom ex council house we rent just off of Weston Way is fairly substantial in size, very well built and has a good sized front garden and massive back garden. I'd buy it in a heartbeat given the financial position. The area is nice and quiet, less air traffic than Stevenage and lots less of those Wayne and Waynetta types you get in parts of Stevenage and Hitchin!

I've lived in a village just outside WGC for the last six years. We really like the area and its proximity to London but have just got so despondant over what our reasonably good budget doesn't buy. Office is now in Hatfield (formerly Finchley) so decided to widen the search and we're now in the process of buying a house in a village between Baldock & Royston and got twice the place for half the money. Needs a bit of work though. Thread on that in the New Year.
