We're seriously considering our first house purchase in High Wycombe and my wife is curious to know what the train service is like. Is it already rammed and horrible by the time it gets to Wycombe? Do all the trains smell of poo?

I suppose I'm asking, is it as bad as every other train or is it even badderer?

Don't use it currently, but a year or two back when I did it was actually a good service. Get's really busy at Gerrard's Cross and even worse if its a slow train and stops at every bloody station. Worst thing about it was the cost and time it took - couldn't do that kind commute again!

I use it every day.
The fast trains (ie, direct or 1 stop to marylebone) can be crowded. I catch the 7.25 and usually get a seat.
Used to get the 6.22 and had no problem.
slower trains / more stops are less crowded.

Service is clean, regular etc.

Just expensive.

I do Beaconsfield to Marylebone for my commute (I live in Penn, and High Wycombe is marginally closer as the crow flies, but takes longer to drive to than Beaconsfield) - I get the 07.51 as this has the best availability of seats (used to get much earlier trains, but found them harder to get a seat).

In general, I think you're going to be fine with Wycombe in terms of seats as it's one stop before, but I'd recommend doing a couple of test runs, as the road that the station is on in High Wycombe can get very busy.

Journey home for me is fine - I get the 19.24 which runs to Wycombe and always get a seat, can be more difficult on the earlier trains though.

Compared to other operators, the service is pretty good, and I like Marylebone as smaller than the other London stations. Main problem is that it's expensive, and that Marylebone tube station can get busy in the morning due to several trains decamping at the same time and everyone heading downstairs - I walk to Baker Street as a result.

Whereabouts in Wycombe are you looking at the moment?

I'm in Penn too and go from Beaconsfield to Marylebone but only very couple of weeks, in fact i'll be there tomorrow morning

No problem with getting a seat but I tend to get the early trains around 6.30 and back home mid afternoon, if I can wink

Small world....wavey

I used to live in Penn. Parents still do...and that's where our 'Office' is.

Live over in Gerrards Cross now.

I commute from Amersham to Marylebone and as long as Marylebone works for you in terms of you're ongoing commute its much more pleasant to transit through than the other mainline stations. I live half way between the Amersham Line into Marylebone and the Berkhamsted line into Euston. I couldn't do the Euston commute every day...tried it once....never again!

Genrally the Chiltern service from Marylebone is very reliable...as long as you get to Marylebone 5 mins before a train departs you will get a seat on every train departing.
