Fox and Hounds at Riseley for me, eat there quite regular and is always good.
How was the Carringtons Arms, I have been but was dissapointed, was it good?
Is the Fox the pub where you carve off as much steak as you want and then get it cooked, just as you like it?How was the Carringtons Arms, I have been but was dissapointed, was it good?
If so, it's great.

The Greyhound in Aldbury always does really nice homecooked food, love it for summer lunches.
I went there a while back and for a starter they did a 'goats cheese terine' (I think that was the description), which was the best thing I have ever, ever eaten. If anyone is planning a visit I urge you to try it. The rest was mediocre, but that was worth the whole trip...
just a bit over the Beds border, but well worth it should you venture up this way,
The Lord John Russell, St Neots
http://www.lordjohnrussell.co.uk/index.html
Bateman Mild,XB,Salem Porter; guest beers [H]/(G)
"A traditional, small back-street pub with a strong local following. The pub centres around the bar, with the main room a mix of pine panelling and brick. At the rear is a small dining area and a large conservatory leading to a patio and smoking area. The food focuses on home made, good value meals and snacks, with lunchtime specials. There is plenty to choose from with three guest beers and a cider available."
IMO the best Real Ale pub in the area (CAMRA seem to be very impressed too, the "most improved pub" award went here!)4 on handpump and 2 served direct from the casks in the cellar and more often than not, very well kept too
the food is great and very reasonably priced too

Assuming Cambs will be added here, there are some fantastic pubs in Cambs county most selling good food too
To start the ball rolling a pub for good food and good (real) ale:-
The Cock, Hemmingford Grey
- a place the wife or g/f would be happy to go to, posh food and service plus multi, multi permatations of bangers, mash and gravy

keeping the Cambs good pubs rolling...
The Rivermill Tavern, Eaton Socon
http://www.rivermilltavern.co.uk/
lovely riverside pub located in ex flour mill, plenty for the family here, Family Room, very nicely cooked/prepared food and good quality Real Ale too
all enjoyed outside overlooking the river views or in the very welcoming unspoilt split level bar (live music, open mic nights etc held upstairs on some nights IIRC)
ETA - nice resource for local Real Beer drinkers here - http://www.huntscamra.org.uk/pubs/pubguide.asp

James I'm amazed you didn't suggest this fantastic basic village real ale pub
- no need to keep it to ourselves only the appreciative will bother to go there as it's not a trendy pub and doesn't serve food
Chequers, Little Gransden, Cambs
(71 Main Road, Little Gransden, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 3DW) (01767) 677348
12-2, 7-11; 11-11 Fri & Sat, 12-6, 7-10.30 Sun
Nethergate IPA, Son of Sid, guest beers (H)
A true village local with three distinct drinking areas, run by the same family for the last 58 years. The,unspoilt middle bar, with its wooden bench seating and roaring fire, is a favourite spot to pick up on the local gossip. The new 'Son of Sid' brewhouse can be viewed from the lounge - brewing for the pub and occasional beer festivals. Fish and chips Friday nights (booking essential well in advance). Stagecoach bus 18A Cambridge Gamlingay.

good description and a true gem of a pub IMO, new Son Of Sid brewery makes some very quaffable ales for sure!
my next choice will go here,
Red House, Longstowe
http://www.novastream.co.uk/redhouse/rhmain.htm
Buntingford Highwayman IPA, guest beers [H]
does (good) food, but its also not really a fashionable or trendy kind of pub either as its pretty much in the middle of nowhere!
situated along the old Gt North Road not far from Wimpole Hall, the pub is interestingly furnished with many eccentric touches and a local artist painted the murals round the bar and in the recently extended restaurant
good quality food is offered and regional and micro breweries provide the Real Ale in the 4 handpumps, quite often see unusual beers here too...

Not from "the bible" (CAMRA GBG 2008) this time but lifted from the site you recommendedAnother Cambs pub that I highly recommend (best Adnams I've had for years) and attracts riff-raff like myself to very wealthy people
Boot, Dullingham, Cambs
18 Brinkly Road, CB8 9UW - 01638 507327
11-11 (midnight Fri & Sat)
Friendly village local save from developement a few years ago, see above for clientele, low ceiling, good straight forward food - did I mention how good the beer was, thought I would have

Market Inn
(Market Hill, Huntingdon, PE29 3NG)

Greene King Ruddles Best Bitter; Potbelly Beijing Black; guest beer [H]
A 400 year old traditional town centre pub down a side alley just off the market square. Once a series of tied cottages serving the former Fountain Hotel Brewery, the pub still has its original roof and three listed fireplaces. Live music (Sat) and quizzes (Wed) are a regular feature. The front bar has attractive unspoilt wood panelled decor and stained glass windows. Very handy location from the bus station.
also a rare Cambs outlet for the superb Kettrin' Potbelly Beijing Black Mild, a lovely tasty brew served alongside Ruddles and a changing guest (often Elgoods, Oakham or similar regional brewer)
a fantastic interior in this pub too, very unspoilt and attractive theres nice and comfortable surroundings for the drinkers round the bar and a pool/games room for the riff raff out the back, well worth a visit IMO, even if only for 1 drink

Spade Oak near Bourne End.Re opened as an Independent.Don't bother, flashy
surroundings,a chicken salad without the chicken!!,poor service , (i could have walked away without paying).I wouldn't complain about the food though ,because its run by someone with all the charisma of a piece of drift wood.

bombay palace in high wycombe do a decent curry, or an excellent one from the basmati or the spice merchant in beaconsfield. leigh house or tao in beaconsfield are great chinese restaurants. dont think there are any "proper" pubs left in the area.
