I'm off to the Carrington Arms tonight so will let you know afterwards what it's like.

I'm currently asking for recommendations on the menu as some of the meats on offer are slightly unusual ! clicky
I've had Kanagaroo and Bison before, both very nice. If you've not tried any of them, just go for it smile and let us know what you think

Supposed to be lovely there... we sometimes go to the Fox n Hounds at Riseley, apparently the people who started the F&H then went to the Carrington Arms, so if its anything like Riseley it will be a great night out

We used to eat in there (F&H) from time to time when I was working at Thurleigh, lovely steaks lick

Well I can't give the Carrington a high enough recommendation, the food was fantastic and the staff have hit the balance between respect and informality perfectly.

It's a bit of an unusual setup. There are no menus, you go into the kitchen and one of the chefs talks you through the meats available. You make your choice and he cuts it to your personal requirements there and then as well as noting how you'd like it cooked and what you want with it (veg, etc). The kitchen is viewable from the majority of tables in the resteraunt so you can watch your meal being prepared, and talk to the chefs' etc.

As well as a mouthwatering array of starters a bread platter is available with a variety of dips.

I decided on the bourbon steak and a bit of Kangaroo steak (well you've got to try something new now and then haven't you) and my wife went for Tuna and Swordfish, both of us with a side salad and mashed potato (me the bog standard with a bit of mustard and hers with garlic). It was delicious.

It wasn't particulalry pricy, with the food, a couple of pints for me, a spritzer for her and a coffee each afterward it came to just over £50.

Oh, and the waitresses were stunning, all 20-odd year old perky blondes that were very friendly woohoo

Herts...

Pubs for food:

The Silver Cup - Harpenden
The Bull - Cottered
The George & Dragon - Watton at Stone
The Fighting Cocks - St. Albans*

Restaurants:

Italian:
La Cosa Nostra - St. Albans. Unpretentious, small, family run place. Prices on a par with Pizza Express and the ilk but the food is so, so, much better. Booking essential. Tiramasu is fantastic.

Indian:
Koh-I-Noor - St Albans. A bit pricey for what you get, but the food is excellent.
The Sultan - St. Albans. Opposite the above, in an old coaching alley-thing. Also pricey but also very good.

Thai:
The Thai Rack - St. Albans. It's just good.

*No parking outside, but park in the school car park at the top of the hill, it's free but nobody knows about it wink This tip also applies to the Indian and Thai restaurants above.

The Wavendon Arms, Wavendon, Milton Keynes. missdiane and myself stopped for a mid-hoon cappuccino and pizza (from the bar, not the restaurant) today.

Very impressed thumbup It's done up very trendy, the food was excellent (although we only had pizza, but it was proper, thin crust pizza ), the bar staff were friendly and it's definitely somewhere where "the beautiful people" go.

Looks similar to The Fox in Harpenden that was mentioned earlier. Also a good place for a 'bar pizza'.

I'd definitely go back (but I'd make more of an effort with what I'm wearing next time!)

The Three Horseshoes in Norton (just outside Letchworth) do good food smile
They are starting to get themselves a good reputation after taking it over a couple of years back. It might also have something to do with the fact that the current landlord specialises in outside catering, weddings etc.

If you go there expecting posh food, you will be disappointed. They do good honest bar meals at a resonable price.

Blimey, if it's the same place, I went there for my 21st birthday (a million years ago).

The restaurant was a tiny little place back then with red and white check tables (it had an upstairs if I remember rightly) and the owner used to come around and do magic tricks and play the violin, or it might have been a banjo. It was brilliant back then and I can remember the food being delicious. Just like my mother in law in Italy used to make lick

[small]I think it was that night that we ran through a huge puddle, flooded something in the car and ended up sitting underneath the bridge at Redbourne until 4.30 in the morning when the car finally started.

Agreed, the Cosa Nostra is a fantastic little restaurant, but not sure if it has an upstairs - you might have been thinking about the Casa Bianca down London Rd which had a small bar area upstairs which you got to up a spiral staircase. It's gone now unfortunately, but that was good too!

For good pub food (and a good pub) in St Albans I can recommend the White Lion in Sopwell Lane. Fantastic home made ice cream!

yum

It's useless for PH meets because it has no carpark... but The Bull in Stony Stratford was a real surprise. Great food for the price - about £9-£10 per meal and a very varied menu - food from all over the world basically. And the chips are moooosive - the size of fun bananas - with their own special kind of coating.

And I've sampled pub food in just about every pub in MK...

Carrington Arms is good imo, but a bit beyond 'pub' food. More like proper resturant stuff. Kangaroo or 'Gator Steak pick of the grub. Good place to eat something you probaby haven't before.
