James I'm amazed you didn't suggest this fantastic basic village real ale pub

- no need to keep it to ourselves only the appreciative will bother to go there as it's not a trendy pub and doesn't serve food

Chequers, Little Gransden, Cambs

(71 Main Road, Little Gransden, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 3DW) (01767) 677348

12-2, 7-11; 11-11 Fri & Sat, 12-6, 7-10.30 Sun

Nethergate IPA, Son of Sid, guest beers (H)

A true village local with three distinct drinking areas, run by the same family for the last 58 years. The,unspoilt middle bar, with its wooden bench seating and roaring fire, is a favourite spot to pick up on the local gossip. The new 'Son of Sid' brewhouse can be viewed from the lounge - brewing for the pub and occasional beer festivals. Fish and chips Friday nights (booking essential well in advance). Stagecoach bus 18A Cambridge Gamlingay.
Ahhh Mitchell's pub!

When Bob's dad ran it, it was certainly a place full of characters. Some of them still frequent it!

OK, one of my favourites -

The John O'Gaunt Inn, in the village of Sutton (SG19 2NE) - not to be confused with the John O'Gaunt golf club on the B1040 between Potton and Biggleswade. The JoG has a good selection of real ales on tap, a real scrumpy cider, plus Carlsberg, Guinness, and a fizzy cider. Food is reasonably good too. Same miserable git of a landlord for nearly 22 years. Opens when he feels like it! Sunday lunchtimes quite popular in the summer with the garden. Fast service doesn't form part of the JoG repertoire, but it's worth it!
Bus Stop right outside! (East Beds Dart)

yes they do - the fresh food on Fridays sounds very good but I don't think there's much choice still people were booking in advance of knowing exactly what would be on offer

We go past a lot, and it never looks open?! The few times we've actually tried it has also been closed. Looked at a house in Sutton last weekend, and again, it wasn't open!?

Does he send up a flare when he opens so the locals can pop in?wink

The Cavalier, Russell Lane, Whetstone / East Barnet border.

Under new management; lovely place - great food (French chef) - reasonably priced.

I can recommend The Fox at Willian (just outside Letchworth)

A little more upmarket than I'm used to but, great food nevertheless. Probably the best bit of Tuna I've ever had smile

Cost about £30 a head excluding drinks.

Only just found this thread, what with being fairly new to the site, but would tell everyone to go to The Swan at Salford (3 miles from J14 M1)

Been there on a number of occasions, food great, good atmosphere, ample parking within viewing distance from where you are. Large beer garden which occationally does a bbq (never been to one mind) and if the weather is good (which would make something of a change) there is draft Pimms if you like that sort of thing in the summer.

Would also suggest a visit to the Wollaston Inn although technically its in Northamptonshire (about 6 miles from Olney in Bucks). Only been there once, but have to say I was very impressed-so was the girlie (who is a qualified chef, and works in high end catering). Now just got to ask the question why i could need to go out, when i could save the money, let her cook, and sort out the TVR!!

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but,

The Stag in mentmore just outside of leighton buzzard is very very nice. Had the grilled sea bass
and it was very good.

Also Mark Webber has a share in it and sometimes is in there during the close of the F1 season.

Regards

Matt

The Stag in Mentmore is superb, could agree more.

Also, Woburn has a couple of decent places to eat, one of which is owned by the same people who own/run the Swan at Salford (as per my earlier post)

Another lovely one for a good drive is the Cowpers Oak in Weston Underwood (just outside Onley)
Pub food, really well done, keen prices, and the best Pint of London Pride for miles around.

Going to the Swan @ Slaford again on Saturday- hopefully in my TVR (just purchased!) if the weather is good.

Will report back in due course, but always expect great times there.

Steak usually sublime- fingers crossed

Just a quick one i discovered whilst booking a table at the Swan....

If you log on to the site, and register as a VIP, you get sent a voucher for a bottle of Champers, or wine or beer if you prefer.

As stated before, going on Saturday, and will report back.

And no, before anyone thinks im in any way attached to the place, I can assure you im not.

I just like good food and good service.

Try it.

a new'un from me,

The Anchor, Little Paxton

(High Street, Little Paxton, St Neots, PE19 6HA(Off A1))

01480 473199

www.theanchorlittlepaxton.co.uk

Adnams Broadside, guest beers (H)

"Built in the early 1800s, the Anchor is a friendly pub that was extensively refurbished in 2006 to create a separate dining area and large L-shaped bar. Four real ales are served. The pub is popular with all age groups from the village, and attracts visitors from the nearby well-known Paxton Pits nature reserve; it is also just off the Ouse Valley Way walk. There is a large car park, beer garden and patio area. Live music every Saturday night."

a very welcoming pub with a nice laid back atmosphere, a good choice of well kept Real Ales too, featuring guests not usually found the area very often...
Also good quality well priced food too, fish is the speciality (some very interesting dishes feature on the specials board!) but a nice varied menu is offered too, a great pub for a quiet pint or a decent family meal

venturing out of my usual comfort zone for a good Beds pub,

The Anchor, Bedford

Greene King IPA, Abbot, seasonal beers, guest beers [H]

a Greene King tied hungry horse restaurant/pub that could well be serving some of the best quality pints of GK beer in the area, it is more often than not rather good, and they often have interesting guests from other breweries on too all dispensed from 6 shiny handpumps
its a fairly large, welcoming and friendly pub located just off the dual carrriageway behind Tesco's next door to the Toby carvery (name of the road escapes me) good quality food is prepared on site (extensive menu catering for all tastes) are served in the large dining/snug area at the front for the diners, whilst a capacious games room & stalled bar area is just up the back for the drinkers (with a big garden too)
a good place for beer & food folk alike IMO

You're not honestly suggesting a Hungry Horse serves good food are you? They are even worse than the Brakes Bros stuff most pubs seems to 'heat up' these days. Probably even worse than the Little Chef!
