Any suggestions as to what some of the best driving roads in South Bucks are?

I recently travelled a bit further north of Bucks, to Quainton, and found some amazing roads. A nice mix of straights and twisties, unfortunately I haven’t found anything closer to home.

Thanks in advance.

Better roads in North Bucks, if you're willing to travel a little.

But you can try following the Ridgeway (runs parallel to the A41 the other side of Aylesbury)

Bryant's Bottom Road that goes through Hampden woods is a good rat run on a dry day, not been on it for a while though.

There are a few roads round by Chequers which are quite good, though there is a nasty pot hole on one of the tighter turns by Chequers. There are also some good roads out through Chinnor -> Benson way.

I like the A413 that runs from Wendover up to Amersham.

Also some nice driving roads from Bicester/Waddesdon/Long Crendon (that sort of area).

Nice road, but downright dangerous on the 1-2 miles part passing Great Missenden when drivers overtake down the middle into oncoming traffic.

I like the back road from Great Missenden past Chequers to Butlers Cross, then turn right into Wendover. Fun, but be sure to drive with a safety margin in mind due to high hedges/farms around.

Watlington to Wallingford via Bensen is fun too.

Edited to add: A40 West of High Wycombe - nice for miles, most of the way to Oxford in fact.

Gt Missenden to Swan Bottom is nice (and you can stop in at PHer's pub [The Old Swan] at the sametime.

The road from Wendover through to Longwick (via Kimble) then out to Thame is ok as well but they have dropped the speed limit in recent times.

I use the A412, A413, A355 but none offer the same thrills (within the speed limit, of course) that the roads near Quainton offer.
Is there anything with a few twisties?

Thanks for all the recommendations so far, hopefully if the weather holds up then I may test some routes out.

There's a great back road from near Bicester to Thame, lovely long sweeping bends with good visibility. Runs off to check Google Maps - its the B4011.

I happen to know TVRs are quicker than sports bikes along here, slowing for villages of course (mainly due to the lack of gonads on the bikers, I know a well ridden bike would be faster).

Have you tried the road that runs from Wing, through Cublington to Whitchurch?

Be careful on the new Wendover Bypass section of the A413 - I have seen many Scamera Vans hidden away up on the side of one of the Bridges.

Outside Chinnor, Sprigs Holly Lane is a very pretty sceneic road - not so much a challenging one.

Off the Watlington road, I like to do the loop through Pyrton, clare, south weston and lewknor.

The roads around The Lee and Lee common near Great Missenden are nice, but very pot-holed at the moment. Also the loop around Little Kingshill, Holmer Green and Little Missenden.

Something like this would be a fun way to spend an hour or so. I do variations on this early on weekend mornings, sometimes dropping into Annie Baileys for Lunch on the junction of Chesham Road and Hyde Heath Road.

It's been like that for many years... I have known people to v-max M3s down there late at night

I drive that way to work and see that every day. People don't seem to understand that trying to overtake when you are going up to a blind crest on a hill is a bad idea.

At least they are sorting the potholes out a bit unlike the A355.

Until recently I used to go down the A41 from Aylesbury to the M25. Not everyone's idea of a great road being a dual carriage way but some nice scenery and usually quiet.

I like the main road (A355) between Amersham and Beconsfield, the one that starts with Stanley hill (hmm..it seems to actually be called gore hill...how odd). It's a bit quick in a fast car though. The very best road is between Beconsfield and Penn (B474, as included on the route above), very challenging mix of corners and it's 50mph limit so you can have fun at legal speeds. It is a bit short though.

Be careful on the B474 as quite a few police around Beaconsfield recently - also don't think it's a 50?! More a 40 with some down to a 30mph limit.

Also some great roads around Cliveden if you head off the A40 near Beaconsfield and head down towards Slough. Only problem is the potholes which are shocking.......

Stanley Hill is the road that goes up towards Little Chalfont with the college on the right.

Thanks, will double check the speed limit next time I go! You are right, it goes to 30 into Beconsfield, and in Penn at the other side, but the bit in the middle (past Knotty Green garage (now closed, I think) and up to the Crown in Penn) is good.

While there are some nice (blind) bends on the B474, I'd hardly put it down as a 'best bucks road'. You nearly always get stuck behind granny miggins in her Honda Jazz and there is only around a mile or so of slightly interesting road. Same goes for the A355 up to Amersham - bit too fast when empty, bit too frustrating when busy. The A413 from Amersham to Wendover is far better, just watch out for the speed trap on the Wendover bypass and people driving down the middle of the road at you there and past GT Missenden. Better still are some of the longer fun roads such as the back road from Bicester to Thame past the prison and the A40 West of High Wycombe.
