I grew up in Stevenage, i just about remember it before the leisure park, when what is now the car park for The Forum (that bit that is home to TK Max/Lidle/JJB Sport's) was the old cinema - my Grandad took me and my brother there to see James Bond.

Plenty of parks to play in, cycle tracks everywhere so it was safe to get about, and plenty of other places to go play/explore - like the Canyon - sliding into a massive chalk crater on a tea tray anyone? Got closed down when they invented health and safety.

Now, well you all know what it's like now. But it wasn't always like that.

As a resident of Stevenage im going to go out on a limb here and say its not that bad?

Alright, the town centres got some right chav scum that frequent it, but from what ive heard, everywhere has?

The road system is alright unlike Letchworth which is the stupidest system ive ever seen, i mean seriously, one single lane road to the A1? its bonkers

Good transport links thanks to fast train into Kings Cross, Two junctions onto the A1

Dont see what the fuss is about
But out of the three things you say about Stevenage the first agrees the town centre is awful and the second 2 comment on ways of leaving town, i,e the road and rail links...

Before pubs had their music licenses strangled and the local music scene was quite healthy, we used to do gigs at a lot of Herts pubs. During our Stevenage gigs we:

- had a collection for a local hospice and some chav stole the collection
- had to endure a to-be married gent on his stag night trying to shag a rubber doll on the pool table in the bar while we played
- were continuously asked to play Irish Rover or Bang on the Ear by pissed pikies

Stevenage is like malaria. Pretty much unanimously people want it exterminated.

There is nothing wrong with Stevenage that a well placed thermo nuclear strike couldn't cure.

Any idea how many warheads a MIRV carries? We could "improove" Stevenage, Harlow, Hatfield and Luton all with one missile scratchchin

Just had a quick look on google and a MIRV can carry up to 12 warheads so we can nuke each town twice just to be certain smile

I'm going to stick up for it, I moved here from Finchley so I realise the bar isn't exactly set that high, but I really like it.

The new town centre IS horrid, but then most town centres aren't places I'd want to spend any time at all. Town centres across the country are populated by exactly the type of people outlined in this thread, that's largely because they have time on their hands and little imagination to do anything else.

Yes, it's largely estate-based, but show me a new town that isn't? Quite frankly, given I would struggle to afford a house where I work (St Albans), I wouldn't live there even if I could - we have a bit of space here, it's largely quiet and in general my neighbours are all fairly pleasant.

EVERY town has its bad bits, and I do appreciate Stevenage won't win awards for it's high-culture town centre, but I happen to quite like it round here, and prefer it to many of the neighbouring areas.

I've not. Surely it can't be any worse than the current market square and surrounding buildings?!

Imagine a U shaped building bout 5 storeys around the church, taking out the car parks with a shopping on the ground floor and im assuming flats above.

Not quite sure who will buy the flats as they cant sell all the ones being built at the mo nor the shops considering half of Hermitage and a good % on Bancroft are empty

I must admit, this time of year is when Stevenage looks its best with all the trees going lovely colours. Now and when it's dark biggrin

Oh crap. That will blend beautifully with the current town centre... What would happen to the market square, after all Hitchin seems proud to be a "market town".

It's the posh name for Stevenage.

If there really was a St Evenage he would be the sacred saint of arson / teenage pregnancy.
Haha - that really made me chuckle.

if you ever fancy a challenge go to the local asda on a Saturday and see how long it is before you run out the store screaming.
I can recommend going to 'Farm Foods' (in the new town next to Maplins)... the missus and I go there sometimes just for the entertainment/comedy value... You can guarantee it will always be full of Chavs having domestics filling their trolleys full of the crappiest food imaginable.

I honestly can't remember the last time I went to the town centre and didn't witness a domestic.

but if you ever wondered where your tax goes the answer is here as there all on the dole or benefit, so they all eat at the local take ways / cafes and have there hair cut and smoke.
And my other half owns one of those takeaways and is doing very nicely but then it was in in the top 3 for the region and is number 1 in Hertfordshire. smokin

I have never lived there (we live in Hertford) but I did grow up in Letchworth. When I was a teenager it had one, yes one, pub. But it is quaint. But Stevenage is great if you have one of the relevant businesses! Am heading over there this evening and might pop into Asda as well!!!!!
