We had similar issues last year and we tried to bodge it, but it just got worse and worse. Fortunately she was only in the water for a couple of weeks for some racing and we were on it every day to pump out, but it's really not worth stuffing about in the long run.
After the time that's been out and the work on it, I'd say your old man is right to consider this to be a bit of a result! Apparently it looks like it's a previously shortened plank anyway as it's only 18" long. Hopefully it won't be too big-a-job to do. I agree. The rest of the joints, even around the recent replanking, were only seeping. It's another lift fee, but still better this way than half way down the Severn.

Annual gas test passed this morning.
£110 to look at a gas bottle, less than a metre of gas pipe and a small 2 ring gas burner. :/

Time for an update. I should apologise for the poor quality photos, there is two reasons, its a very cheap camera and I'm a dreadful photographer. The really good news is that all the keel bolts are now out, including the 4 very long ones which took over an hour each. I've bought enough bronze rod and nuts and washers to replace them. I can't help but think, when considering the alternatives, that bronze is the best compromise of being contemporary to the boat and corrosion resistant. Console starting to look really good.  Bit more broken wood fixed with a new bit.  Yet more new wood.  Third attempt at laminating a pair of new supports for the anti cavitation plate at the transom.  A locker lid being painted.

It'll have to look messy before it gets better. Your instrument panel proves that.
All progress is good progress.
Do you have a timetable for when you want her back in the water?

Gathering pace now... As of this evening the new keel is in place, shipwright Jim did a cracking job of scarfing the keel together, African mahogany, 1 1/8 thick, 3 1/2 inches wide. It was dry fitted on the weekend and tonight its glued in place. I think, aside from a couple of tiny bits, all woodwork is now complete! Yay! I just have a huge amount of painting to do. Pictures speak a thousand words.   New cockpit linings in place.   We extended the outer extremity of this new bulkhead to strengthen the joint in the frame at the chine.  One thing I wanted to achieve was addressing the strength of the inner structure of the boat, right to the core. I'm happy that we've done that. Good as new! I'm sure the 'Three Wise Men' would approve.

She's 45 this year, she was new when Olympic sailor Charles Currey took her to a class victory in the Cowes-Torquay race in 1967. I did all this 10 years ago, so hopefully another 10 years, although, ideally I'd do it sooner, maintaining is one thing, getting one back from letting them go is another. I'd like to sell this year, I have my eye on a Huntsman 31 that sank and was recovered....I must need proffessional help..... The thought of selling fills me with dread.

I couldn't help noticing the 28 with shaft damage but talked myself out of it. Three years ago I came within a whisker of handing over folding for this before the head kicked in. http://boatmad.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1360...Sanity and these boats doesn't compute.

You definately should have bought Broad Jumper, we could have had 333 and 666 blasting about!

She had low line perkins in her so the interceptors had unfortunately disappeared forever I guess, the deck had been removed and a not very nice cabin built on top. I guess there comes a point where they are not worth saving as the original intent has been destroyed although I think she may have gone back to the states. Anyway can you really imagine me with a boat of initials BJ and the number of the devil on the side.... You're right I should have done it.

Hi John With the exception of a few weeks each spring for antifoul, varnish and odds and sods, I have had her afloat continuously for 10 years. Best place for a wooden boat is in the water and lifting them in cranes is never good for them.

Rower Yes, mine is in good order. I know that a few have been replaced, but I wouldn't say that the transom is a problem area any more than many other parts of them! You have to consider that its a cheap plywood boat from over 40 years ago! Its hardly the same as teak on oak bronze fastened with lead keel!

You have to consider that its a cheap plywood boat from over 40 years ago! Its hardly the same as teak on oak bronze fastened with lead keel! Friends of mine used to own Double Century and were convinced that the stern was going to fall off at some stage , but she had been well used !!

You are right, she did the longest race of all and survived, unlike her counterpart Spirit of Michaelhouse which sank.

I've taken a day off on Monday in order to lift in the replacement engines I've bought from a chum, they had been in a Swordsman, I found one sump full of water...not entirely sure what happened but I didn't time for a rebuild so bought some more, Mrs Huntsman was delighted, there goes the conservatory in a puff of smoke!They were delivered to the yard yesterday. We've painted the bilges and started to assemble the boat.  New DZR ball valves with bronze hose tails.  New sterngland hose, replaced the double jubilee clips with a single Mikalor W4, I noticed that one of the old clips had started to slide off the end, I think this is much more secure albeit a single point of failure.  Raw water separators are now fitted, and plumbed in, see the teak deck, that's had 2 coats of Deks Olje D2, needs 4 more.  One tank in place on some new foam strips courtesy of a chum.  New Vetus exhaust hose now fitted and some other bits and bobs, all loose items in bilge paint grey now finished, some white bits to finish off. Last night we whacked a coat of half and half (undercoat and enamel) onto the topsides, I brushed on and Mrs Huntsman laid off, still quite a bit of work to do there.

There's a boat I've seen a few times moored at Portsmouth (and once at Gosport)... it's apparently based on the hull of the classic WW2 Vosper MTB but was never an MTB... it's powered by three gas turbines and was clocked going across the Channel at 60Knots in the 1950s/60s! Anyone know the craft I mean? It's a lovely looking thing, looks like a boat should. If boats could fight, it'd be Chuck Norris
