yikes

How on earth do you try that for the first time without risking plummeting to your death? Spectacular stuff, but I prefer my landings to be as unspectacular as possible.
I'm guessing you try it a very long way up the first few times. biggrin
Fruity side-slip on approach is a way of life for Pitts, Eagles and the like, if you prefer being able to actually see the runway, as opposed to acting on faith.

The prop makes a huge difference between left and right hand side-slip as well. In the Pitts, it always took less stick and rudder with the nose to the left, but I always preferred left stick right rudder for some reason.

I'm afraid too many people learn how to react in these circumstances from watching films. Then their second thought is how much compensation they think they might be able to get. Then the third thought it that they might be able to get on telleh.

This is a much more interesting landing at LBIA.

That pilot must have been a ballerina in a previous life.
That was simply beatifull... all fidgety and swooshy till a few seconds out form touchdown and calmly turns it round and puts it down. Wow.
bow Great skill.
It's not till the pylon comes into view that you realise quite how sideways it's all moving.

If you think that's the worst thing you haven't experienced Bradford!

Whenever I've been there the wind has always been straight across the runway and I seem to remember some nasty turbulence on approach to the southerly runway.
I'm yet to experience a bad approach, however, climbing out of LBA and straight into cloud on a flight to Düsseldorf back in January, on a very light 737 (only about ten PAX on board), was interesting, to put it mildly.

I was based at Leeds for a couple of years. I managed to escape the really windy days but it could be nasty! I've moved to Manchester now - much better, bliss!

My Brother In Law was until very recently a first officer for Ryanair based at Leeds.

His facebook status used to regularly say "yay it's windy, another day of landing sideways."

Always used to make me chuckle hehe
pfft, Ryanair pilots get cheers and a round of applause from the cattle in the back for a smooth landing on a windless sunny day, and as for the fanfare and "Hey, we're good, we did our fukkin jobs again" from the tannoy, W.T.F?

smile

edit to add smilie, we actually had a great flight on Ryanair

Flew out of LBA every week for 12 weeks when I had a conract in Belfast a few years ago.

It was a turbo prop and there were a few interesting landing including aborted ones.

Became quite blase about it after a few weeks. One of our party fell to sleep as soon as we lifted off and had to be woken up when we landed even in the most horrendous weather.
