We took our flying fifteen to Rutland water on Sat, had a great day. After our usual sailing club we felt lost out on the vast expanse of water. Not brave enough to tackle the sea yet. got a bit of video recorded on mobile, turned out a lot better than I thought.

Have a look

Nice! But I was not expecting that soundtrack on a Fred video...most of the Fred sailors in our club would be filming on 8mm and adding "greensleeves" as the soundtrack! I'm not knocking Freds though...I saw one out in the Solent in a proper F6+ last year and it looked epic. Mind you, never seen crash helmets in a Fred!

I'll see your Fred at Rutland and raise you a 49er at Draycote. Excuse the rather shocking gybes though...not had it long! Camera is a GoPro wide gaffer taped to a ski pole gaffer taped to the boom.

Cracking vid. Will get a GoPro one day. That 49er look a bit too exciting for us.

Couple of tips...

Helm-hold the tiller extension properly. You want to go for the "briefcase" grip, (extension behind you, next to your thigh) or the "microphone" grip where it crosses your upper body, and you bend your back arm at the elbow as if you were holding a microphone. Hold it much further up the extension in either case, and sit further forward.

Crew-I was wondering why you were hanging onto the shroud all the time, and then at the very end it looks like you are trying to hike out without your feet under the toestraps...bad! If they are not in the right place, adjust them. You should be able to brace yourself in the boat with feet under the straps and hanging lightly onto the jib sheet.

Also, it looks like you don't have a ratchet block on the main jammer. Fit one. It will make things much easier and also encourage you to keep the main trimmed constantly. And seriously, helmets...(assuming here that one/both of you does not have a previous injury/fragile head)...they are totally unnessasry in an F15...you are sailing a big ploddy keelboat that is unlikely to fire you into the forestay at 20 knots. All the crash helmet will do is make your wind awareness worse, give you a false sense of security, a false idea of how big your head is compared to the gap it needs to fit through, generally get in the way, and make you subconsciously not care if you feel the boom tap your head on a gybe. It's the equivalent of fitting stabilisers to a child's bike, one day they will have to come off and you will feel all nervous. If you are worried about cracking your head on a gybe, you would be far better fitting some pipe lagging onto the boom until you are confident. Personally, I would never dream of riding a bicycle without a crash helmet on, but in a small keelboat, let alone a dinghy, they are complete H&S gone mad overkill.

I see Laser Picos with masthead flotation and 2 adults aboard, with crash helmets on, being towed out of the river Medina in a long line with two guard RIBS at the weekends and I despair.

The two lads in the vid are brothers. Their dad suffered a head injury that has blighted him the rest his life from a relatively minor knock. I suppose they have been bought up to protect their heads. We realise that we are crap sailers, but it's like sex, you don't need to be any good to enjoy it.
