Are you suggesting that this is our comeuppance for things that happened in the past? And that we somehow deserve it? It sounds like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder there.

Hope so Ian.
I predicted right at the start of this thread that the Rafale might win this on the basis that the Indians have already used a number of Dassault products over the years and are used to dealing with that company. I'm not saying that they WILL order the Rafale - but I wouldn't be surprised if teh Rafale does end up being selected.

But, despite the conclusions some posters seem to be making regarding the offer price - there is no evidence whatsoever the Indians have made any sort of final decision.

Not a chip but one on each shoulder so quite a well balanced person.

I do get annoyed when people bleat about the aid . Balance that against the systematic rape of India over a few hundred years .

But no that was in the past so it does not count.

Fairy muff. Off for a cuppa , tetley of course smile

And in return a potential multi billion dollar French nuclear deal goes in the other direction?

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com//articleshow/1...

Indo-French ties seem to have strengthened significantly over the recent years - in 2010 India signed a $20b deal to buy French nuclear reactors. Here, the last Labour government had blocked the export of nuclear technology on the grounds that India had refused to sign the international non-proliferation treaty. However Dave promised to life this restriction last year. Hope we've not missed the boat and will secure future contracts.

I think the general feeling in India is that the IAF would have been happy with either plane, but had a slight leaning towards the Rafale. I cannot see Dassault messing up the final details. As I understand it the price has been accepted by the Indian Government and the funds have been allocated.

Eurofighter can make a legal challenge, but I hope they don't act like sore loser Americans just for the sake of it.

There is one possible fly in the Dassault ointment. Allegations of bribery involving Carla Bruni and Sonia Gandhi no less that were made back in May 2011, by a politician Mr Subramanian Swamy who predicted the Rafale victory. But I think that is clutching at straws.

I have yet to see official figures of the price difference. If it is vastly different, then you've got to say that Dassault have undersold their product. If it is just a few Euros, then Eurofighter will be gutted (and suspicious???).

They'd better start Eurofighter contract talks with the Pakistanis then.

Seems obvious to me that the Indians are trying to get the price of the Typhoon down a bit, using the Rafale as a pawn. Hence the comments about it being purely a price thing, and why they have made these comments rather than announcing a decision. I guess Typhoon have until "March at the earliest" to provide a better deal...

In exchange for what, mangoes? The Pakistanis are skint.

We should push on selling more to the Arabs.

Because the Indians will soon change their mind if they think their hated neighbours are investigating the purchase of better aircraft than those they have agreed to further negotiations with from the French.

As VMc says the Pakistanis can’t afford anything at the moment, let alone a Typhoon. The Indians will rightly see it as “sour grapes” on our part and will bear it in mind the next time we put a bid in. And selling one to the Pakistanis means that the Chinese will be building copies 2 days later. So absolutely no value in that course of action.

Saudi, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE – they’ve got the money and the need for Typhoon. If we play our cars right this could be as big as Al Yamamah 1/2

How do Saudi, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE have a 'need' for Typhoons, or similiar capable A/C?

They at best are US military staging bases, isn't the US 5th Fleet based out of Bahrain? Am sure the US has circa 20,000+ troops in Saudi too. With uncle Sam ever present - I fail to see how these countries need Typhoon type capabilities?

How many sorties did the Saudi'Qatari's etc do in the Gulf Wars? Bahrain might need the odd ground attack A/c to continue to supress its own population, but to suggest that these countries need a 4th Generation Air superiority fighter is way off the mark.

It's all about Money, and for some of the above countries, Kudos and keeping up with the Jones' - from a military hardware point of view. British (and other) defence companies know this...

In a previous military life I've spent a lot of time in the region, and most of them wouldn't put a balloon up without the US knowing about it or sanctioning it.....it would play havoc with their daily Awacs operations.....

The harrier was a fantastic plane .
Some of you chaps seem to misunderstand what I am trying to say.
Let me try again , do not bh about aid . The British robbed India to the tune of billions in today's money.
I am not bitter or twisted about this but I feel it should be pointed out .
My parents are from India and as such were allowed to move here. We have had a better quality of life here although we were not poverty stricken in India but due to family problems my dad decided to move here.

Private industry, in the main, same as it was in the UK.
