the platform is largely irrelevant in type of this conflict, they are effectively just delivery vans. the weapons system was far more important. Typhoons carried Paveway, Tonkas carried Brimstone.
Typhoons carried Paveway II.

Tornados carried generally 2 Paveway IVs on the RH shoulder and Brimstone launcher fully loaded with a Litening III pod in front on the LH Shoulder. They also did a 5 Paveway IV fit aswell, using the centre pylon aswell, with Asraam on the Stubs in both configs.

Our boys are finally coming home this week!

i was generalising because the point i was making was more that typhoon can not carry brimstone which from many reports appears to have been the favoured weapon during the conflict.

They also operate Harriers, MiGs and Sukhois.

I do think they'll go for the Rafale, but because it is a better aircraft, with a more dependble after sales support infrastructure; not due to it being French.
Yep! me too.... and of course the Rafale can be operated from carriers......

But why is it a "better aircraft"? Every comparison I have seen rates the Typhoon as technically far superior to the Rafale

A Telegraph article at the weekend reported that the Indian test team had arrived at the same conclusion:

Thing is, you buy the tools for the jobs you will be doing.

Rafale would be more than good enough to deal with anything the PAF is capable of getting off the ground. The PLAAF on the other hand is a different kettle of fish.

Spot on! What we don't know are the detailed customer requirements i.e. What mission? Rafale has proven maritime characteristics etc and carrier ready...
India has a lot of coastline (not saying that this would be the mission).. alot of the capabilities are Software derived.... which can always be replaced/upgraded..

The Rafale that has been shortlisted is the Rafale C, so no carrier capability.

I saw an abbreviated report about this on BBC teletext before I went to bed last night. It implied that the Defence Secretary had announced that Typhoon had won the contract! In light of my earlier posts, that did surprise me somewhat! I think we'll need to wait a while longer yet.

Very strong rumours coming out of India that Typhoon has won this deal.

Nothing official yet, but Indian wires are hot with strong indicators that Typhoon was the cheapest unit cost (known as L1) and that the two rival Parties have been summoned for an announcement on 12.01.12.

Does this banner mean anything...?

The banner might just be for marketing purposes. But yes, great news if true. What was the alternative? F-35, Rafaele?

Final decision is between Eurofighter and Rafale.

MiG-35, F-16, F/A-18 and Gripen were ruled out earlier in the tender process.

Yawn. This could still rumble on for months yet according to this Reuters report today:

http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/01/17/india-def...

Even if they do make an initial decision by the end of this month (maybe by the time of their Republic Day on 26 January?), it still seems that might not be the end of the story and that further cost negotiations are expected.

I doubt it would get as bad as Hawk - took something like 19yrs from selecting the aircraft to them signing the contract to buy it

The Indians are probably holding out whilst the negotiations on who will pay the biggest kickback are completed.
