Im looking for information on these trains, I know nothing about trains but stumbled across them and they look like a nice piece of history thats been left to rot.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=off&a...

They are just off Oldham road in Newton Heath, near the closed Dean Lane train station. They are sat on tracks but they are only as long as they trains and rolling stock thats there. Walls and buildings have since been built boxing them all in.

The station there seems to have closed in 1966 but the trains look more modern than that,

There is one that looks like a deltic style train, that would surely be later than 1966?

No, all the Deltics are pre-'66. As are any other locos of that shape. Probably a '37', loads of those in private ownership.

They are not abandoned, but were being restored by the Newton Heath Diesel Traction Group. They are stored on a private industrial premises, not rail connected. The Class 31 (31144) was withdrawn from service in Jan 1996.

Here's a video of them upsetting their neighbours

Newton Heath circa early 80's

And in the 60's

So I dont know why the locals would object to one class31 starting for about 30secs they've lived with the depot for nearly 150years!

The 31 diesel has been moved, it took 8 men, 16 hours to load it onto a truck. Apparently it was "dragged" onto the back of a purpose built trailer. Its then supported with sleepers and moved to its new home in "wierby" or "weirby" I have googled but cant find a place with that name so ive miss heard.

They also told me the forward cab on the truck is the biggest in the world, something to do with carting heavy loads. It had a full police escort and 8 men on the day, so its a very expensive hobby.

If anyone knows more, id love to hear about it.

31144 has been removed from Newton Heath and has been taken to EMR at Salford pending being forwarded to the Weardale Railway.
