Has it been done before, and did it work? I dont mean some fk off huge Jumbo Jet, but maybe a Cessna(sp?). I think it would be pretty cool. So has it, and is there a possibility of it?

Not sure a 150mph wind in your chops is going to be too much fun after a while...

I'm not sure that an aeroplane has been designed to be convertible - it's a minor consideration when designing such a thing, however there have been many, many designs that could be flown with the canopy open or closed. The vast majority of propeller based aircraft with sliding canopies and even some jets at the lower end of the speed range could do so.

Nothing I enjoy more than blasting about in the Yak with the canopy open - happy to fly like than all day in the summer, and 20 minutes or so in the winter is the best way to blow cobwebs away bar none.

Just don't stick your arm out the side though!

Most helicopters have release mechanisms to remove the doors.

Nice when it's warm, but you have to make sure there are no loose objects, and it is uncanny looking down by the side of your seat to see the ground below. A nice harness feels more comforting than a lap or diagonal belt.

Nearest I can think of are the blind flying hoods for trainer aircraft:

Pulled over the cockpit for instrument flying practice.

When I saw the topic I thought the OP meant

obviously wrong again Bill... Getting used to it now smile

Two out of the three glider types I have flown in were open cockpit, (prolly why I like my Midget) and did once fly in a Chipmunk with the canopy slid back, draughty but so much fun

Not sure about a folding hood though, think I prefer to be able to look around when in the sky.

Open cockpit flying is great, but can get very cold!

Really didnt like the open cockpit glider for some reason.

Our Rallye can be flown with the canopy open up to 85 knts, not tried it yet, will give it a go in Spring. I flew a Tiger moth for my 40th and that was a fantastic experience with wind in the hair and whistling through the wires
