Going back to where she was built in Italy to be broken up.

Fantastic article, from which we can determine that it will be doing somewhere near 240 knots when it arrives at it's final destination. wink

I bet the locals are going to miss the "mini economy" that surely must have grown up around this sad tale over the last couple of years.

Refloat & recovery cost €1.5bn according to the TV news. Can that be right?

I'd think so. She'll be scrapped. Nothing of any functional use will be any good after prolonged immersion in salt water (well, maybe the props if they'll fit anything else and are undamaged).

I'd imagine most of the booze on board would be salvable if seals, corks and stoppers are undamaged. Bet there's a ton of cheap Italian sparkling on board !!!

What's all the gear attached to the left side of the ship, where it was crushed

Is it gear to prevent the side from reflooding?

Wouldn't it be a disaster if they lost it now.

It would also save a heap of money!scratchchin

I hope we get to see the ship, without all that rigging - To get a proper view of the damage....

And that they find that waiter's body.

Why?

The salvage money has already been spent. Some of that will be recouped by the scrap value. They wouldn't get that if she fell to the floor of the Med.

I expect the cost of towing it and breaking it up will be close to the scrap value anyway...

Over €1,000,000 per resident of Giglio in salvage costs...if I lived there, I'd keep it for that.

According to one media report it is expected to provide employment for 1,000 people for two years while being broken up. Italian wages are pretty low but even at €20,000 per person per year that comes to €40m before you've paid for the dry dock space or any equipment, or disposed of all the nasty hazardous gloop sloshing around inside the wreck.

Surprised you petrolheads haven't said more on this. But then again the mainstream news has moved on now the ship has been parbuckled, towed to Genoa and the Captain found guilty, but there's still a lot to do to fully dismantle the ship. Information can be found here:

http://shiprecycling.it/la-concordia-assetto-attua...

If you click the blue 'Concordia' tab on that page, you have various photos and information fact sheets and other snippets.

And the stages of dismantling are explained here

http://gcaptain.com/the-four-phases-of-the-costa-c...

Finally, the latest photos of dismantling can be found here, deck 6 has been stripped, they are onto deck 7 now
